Budget business flights take off

The first flight for a business-class only transatlantic airline linking Luton Airport in Bedfordshire and the US is set to take off on Thursday.
Return fares to New York Newark Airport start at £999 undercutting existing business-class transatlantic fares.

Silverjet claims to be the first carbon neutral airline by charging passengers a mandatory carbon offset payment.

Chief executive Lawrence Hunt said this commitment to the environment showed they were a responsible business.

Silverjet will be competing with two American business class carriers – Eos and MAXjet – which operate to America from Stansted Airport.

Responsible business

Mr Hunt said: “For too long, long-haul airline travel has been associated with hassle, disappointment and environmental damage.

“We’ve spent the past three years talking to customers and feel confident that Silverjet addresses their biggest concerns.

“As a business we have to behave responsibly in all sorts of ways especially when it concerns the environment.

“If we don’t do something then the government will and that means more taxes which will be spent on administration and bureaucracy.

“Our mandatory payment offers a simple solution for the customer.”

Each Silverjet aircraft will have 100 business class flat beds, with individual food service, personal in-flight entertainment systems and a separate women’s toilet.
