Bulldog

Last week while travelling to work at about 2 o’clock in the after noon I nearly crashed when I spotted a Bulldog looking pristine in it’s red/white colour scheme , she was on the back of a lowloader on her wheels with the outer wings under the tail. This was on the M8 between Edinburgh and Glasgow and she was Edinburgh bound .Any idea were it was travelling from /to ( maybe going to East Fortune ???)

RE: Bulldog

Managed to track down the Bulldog – she is in the James Watt College in Glasgow , she is complete apart from her outer wings which have been removed to save on storage space , she is to be kept with all her systems operational to be used as a ground training aircraft for the HND in Aeronautical Engineering offered at the college , she is in excellent condition and still in UAS colours , having just been released from storage at Shawbury .

RE: Bulldog

Naw was definately red/white (light grey) upper and lower , seen them before , one of the guys I met at the NCO /CO selection week in 1990 went on to Shawbury to do his EFT and later the rotary wing syllabus and it was the same colour scheme as they ones stored there, I also believe they burnt one of the stored Chipmunks after one of the officers formal dining evenings just for fun , he went on to fly Chinooks from Shawbury then Odiham – I’ll stick to things with wings thank you.

RE: Bulldog

ageorge, you quoted seeing a white and red bulldog, the only ones of this type were operated by the HKAAF. They were overall white with a large diagonal band, in red down the side of the fuselage, the wingtips were also red.

UAS/EFT Trainers were painted Red and gray, altho i’ll give you the fact that the gray was quite light- but not white.

However no matter, nice to see these lovely aircraft, of which I spent over forty hours flying in my short time associated with the RAF. They are much more ideal as trainers than C152’s and the poor visibility and inaccurate instruments- read fuel gauges that are ignored-they have to offer. I also have experience to solo in C152’s

If the aircraft is a RAF one its come from storage at RAF Shawbury.

Very nice pictures keithmac, a privileged man, no doubt, if least of all to live between lossie and kinloss!!

RE: Bulldog

Hi Keith , is there anything interesting in the fire pits at all , used to be some good stuff in the Leuchars fire pits but I don’t know how much is there now , there was the bulk of a Percival Sea Prince and large bits of Phantom , however the MOD Police /RAF Provosts are getting a bit agitated about people wandering around the east end of the airfield , even though its not MOD property.

RE: Bulldog

Hi Ageorge. There was the complete fuselage frame of an Anson, minus the fabric and fittings lying out at the back of Kinloss near the burning area. I last saw it in the late early 90’s. I went back to the area 2 years ago, but it seems to have gone.

RE: Bulldog

We’ve just come down from Cullen and my mate stays in Findochty , spent some time in Elgin recently as I could remember about 6 years ago there was a scrapyard in town which was full of bits of Buccaneer and other stuff but it’s all gone now !! , is there any scrapyards up there now or have they all been cleared out.Elgin probably has the most interesting ppetrol station in Britain , the Bucc looks like she’s reasonably well cared for . At least up there you’ve plenty interesting aircraft moving about , I live smack halfway between Edinburgh and Glasgow and we never see anything interesting unless something diverts into Turnhouse.I tried to contact the CCO (Corporate Communications Officer !!) at Kinloss as I heard they had found some quite substantial remains of an old Anson out on the airfield somewhere – but I never got a reply. A guy I used to go flying with ,George Brunton, was an instrument fitter on Wessex’s but I don’t know where about he was based . Nice bit of the world to live in .

RE: Bulldog

Hi Ageorge, I ran the engine repair section at Kai Tak. So I managed to get a bit of flying in on the Wessex. I had a few mates on the RHKAAF so we organised a photo shoot. As you can see however the weather turned out a bit like a Scottish summers day!
Lots of things fly in Scotland, but admittedly not much of the historic variety, I live slap bang between Kinloss and Lossie, so no shortage of aircraft around here.

RE: Bulldog

As Coanda mentioned the HKAAF Bulldogs, I thought I’d post these. I took them from a 28 Sqn Wessex over the New Territories in 1978.

RE: Bulldog

Yes it was a Scottish Aviation Bulldog in UAS colours , I hope somebody up here is going to fly it , theres already a Beagle in the Museum of Flight , I hope someone does intend to fly it – that will be as close as we’ll get to a Scottish based “warbird”!!!!!!! , I though somebody was going to display the crated Mig15-17’s and the Hinds that were lying at Cumbernauld Airport but they all went “missing” !!! , anybody know where they went to ????

RE: Bulldog

if you mean a scottish aviation/beagle/BAe bulldog, its probably an ex Honk kong Auxiliary airforce example and it could be going anywhere to any airfield, probably operational, as seen in one of this months General aviation magazines.
