Bulldogs Aerobatic Team

On behalf of the owner of one of the team’s former aircraft (XX516) does anyone know anything about the Bulldogs Aerobatic Team, which was active in the late 1970s. The owner is curious as to how they were formed, for how long, how many airshows did they perform at and locations, team aircraft, team members, etc. A photo of his aircraft, marked with the team’s titles, is at:

The Bulldog Aerobatic Team (actually a duo) were formed for the 1974 season and were active until IIRC 1979. They effectively replaced the Chipmunk equipped “Blue Chips” duo that disbanded in 1973. As 2FTS was joint RAF/RN, an instructor from both dark and light blues formed the team. Their first public display was the Exeter & Greenham RAFA events 6-7 July.

Not any additional information as such but I grew up next to RAF Leeming and remember frequently seeing the team practice in and out of season, during the late 70’s and maybe early 80’s. Also remember seeing them at Teesside Airshow the first few years (1980 onwards?) that was on, they also used to fly at local village fayres etc.

I remember a young kid at Teesside in the first year hearing a young child asking his dad if they were the Red Arrows!

I flew XX516 on eight occasions as a student pilot with the Royal Navy EFTS at Leeming between Oct 1978 and March 1979.

The unit CO was Lt Cdr Lamb and it is his name on the side of the aircraft in the photo.

However…..I can only assume the Bulldog Team was formed after I moved on to 705 NAS at Culdrose to fly the Gazelle. It was prabably formed with QFI’s from RNEFTS and CFS who were resident at Leeming in the late 70’s

I am a current PPL and would love the opportunity to fly a Bulldog again……hint to your friend 😀
