It looks as if there is still a lot of cold (or hot) air between the United States and Cuba. Normalisation between the two is far away (the USA could earn billions if the market with Cuba was opened). This is something I do not understand. Cuba is no treat against the USA, Castro/Cuba is not worse (but sometimeseven better)than other dictators/countries (China) the USA has good relations with, so why is Cuba still a propaganda/economical target. I’ll gues it is for the Cuban (hardline) voters living in Florida. I can not see there is another reason ( both democrats and republicans think more or less the same in this case, although Jimmy Carter recently tried to ease the current situation), or is Cuba (still ?) a tread to the USA (if it ever was).

RE: Bush versus Castro
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 18-06-02 AT 07:28 PM (GMT)]The Cubans traded the Dictator Batista for Dictator Castro. Castro and his close cronies are wealthy with huge bank accounts. Cuba was the showpiece of communism in the western hemisphere. It was heavily subsidized by the Soviet Union until 1989. When the Soviet money stopped, the communist utopia bubble burst and Cuba crumbled to it’s present impovershed state. Only the US upheld the embargo. No other nations recognize the embargo and Cuba still flounders as nobody wants to have their investments stolen by the Castro cronies. I guess Castro communism is not so wonderful after all.

RE: Bush versus Castro
As former metropoli we have a special conection with the cuban population. I think the revolution brought some progress in the beginning and was needed but with time everything got ruined, for Castro not being able to release power. Castro is a ditator and not suitable for anyone. However I don´t think he´s a threat for anyone. Simply the cuban community in Miami vote for the republicans and they want the president to be grateful. The embargo is senseless, but the current economic situation is not entirely for the embargo. Lots of countries trade with them at very advantageous conditions. In the future I suppose some improvements of the revolution should be manteined, but Castro should be thinking on elections, there should be a reconciliation of all cubans and for some american politicians they shouldn´t be such much obsessed about tiny Cuba. There´s something I can´t understand. The americans are supposed not be permitted to travel to the island. Are they punished if they do when they come back?. I know there´re not direct flights, but if they travel via other place?. What happens then?. When I stayed in Cuba, I didn´t see any American tourist over there.
