BWIA has suspended sales of tickets on all UK originating routes (from Belfast, Manchester and Glasgow Prestwick) except for London Heathrow. The airline has stated that they are not yet announcing suspension of the routes, although this cannot be far behind in reality.

BWIA has been rescued more times than a lifeboy. It nearly went down in 03 when I was in barbados. Last thing it needs is a loss making route.Would have though atleast the MAN route would survive? What about a service to mainland Europe, Frankfurt of Scandanavia? I know the French and Dutch stick to their(former) islands but Europe is largely an untaped market.

The government has granted a Trinidad $222.9 million (US$35.6 million) bailout package for troubled airline BWIA and suspended several flights to the Caribbean and Europe, the latest effort to save the national carrier from financial collapse, an official said.
The suspension of flights to Costa Rica, Cuba, Curacao, the Dominican Republic, Ireland, and Manchester, England was effective immediately, Public Administration Minister Lenny Saith said Thursday. He did not say how long the flights would be suspended.
The suspensions were a set back for the airline’s efforts to expand its routes. Trinidad’s government has bailed out BWIA repeatedly since the drop in travelers that followed the Sept. 11 attacks in the United States.
Although tourism in the Caribbean has surged in recent months, regional airlines continue to struggle with increased insurance and security costs.
BWIA laid off a quarter of its 2,400 workers in early 2003 in an attempt to recover, but it has continued to struggle.
The government increased its 49 percent stake in the airline to 75 percent last year. The government stepped in when a leasing company seized two BWIA jets and the airline was nearing bankruptcy with a total debt of about US$100 million.
“The establishment of efficient airline transportation between this country and the rest of the world is an important public policy,” Saith said.
He also announced plans to inaugurate a flight to Caracas, Venezuela, later this year.
In January, BWIA began twice-weekly flights to Curacao in an attempt to increase its earnings in the Caribbean.
A six-man task force headed by businessman Arthur Lokjack is studying options for the airline’s future and will make its recommendations to the government by April 30.
BWIA operates flights to Canada, Miami, New York, Washington, D.C., London, England and several other Caribbean and South American destinations.

Should’ve flown from EDI. 😉
Probably wouldn’t have solved their overall, fundamental financial issues even if the runway could cope with a Trinidad bound A340 ? :diablo:

Sad to hear PIK is loosing a route. Such a shame
Couldn’t fly from EDI (or GLA), runway lengths too short for an A340 I’m told, and yes, it’s a shame if it does happen, as I’m told loads were good from PIK.
