I think Brazil will miss him, but I think the others like Rivaldo and Ronaldo will suffice. Great to see the underdogs do so well, but the cream has risen to the top again. I predict Brazil over Turkey tonight 2-1.
What about third place? Korea still has a chance for some glory.
Turkey will need to be on the ball tonight, as they stuffed up some really easy shots against Senegal in the QF. YOU CAN’T miss chances like that against Brazil.
Good luck to all.

RE: bye bye England
Hi Kev,
Sadly this is not the first time I’ve had troublesome neighbours, and I know too well the situations you describe. I’ve never had to come to blows with them, though I’ve often felt like it.
Noise pollution is a major stressor and like you say, it really takes your life away from you. It comes to a fine thing when you are more stressed at home than at work.
We’ll see…
BTW I must apologise: I have neglected to offer my sincere commiserations to all the England fans out there. You made a very good account of yourselves and counfounded your pre-tournament critics. Yours is a team for the future. Roll on 2004 and 2006!

……Like I predicted guys – Germany and Brazil in the Finals.
I also predicted Ronaldhino as the dangerman. Sad we will not see him in the semis. Hopefully Brazil will not really need him to beat Turkey.
Also real proud of Korea- great for Asian football. I a quandry as to whether to root for the Koreans or the Germans – I predicted the Krauts to win this one. und zem panzer boys are koming KLOSE.

RE: bye bye England
Snowman,
sorry to hear about your neighbour problems, we had five years of that, and, after involving the police numerous times to no avail, I must admit I resorted to using my fists, several times! It did no good really, just made me feel better. It was such a relief when they finally left, it was almost like getting your life back. I think that’s one of the things people really fear now, having troublesome neighbours. You tell the police about the drugs and they don’t care, you talk to environmental health about the noise but they won’t come and listen at 3am when your windows are rattling because the music is so loud. Sorry to be gloom and doom, I hope your problem gets sorted soon.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 22-06-02 AT 03:08ย PM (GMT)]Hi Kev,
I hope you are right in your view about hooligans… I really do! But this general lack of respect for others is becoming a worryingly regular feature these days. New neighbours have just moved in next door to me and have shown a total disregard for people around them. I live on a fairly quiet, respectable working-class, residential street and we have had no end of trouble with them so far. (That’s one thing I don’t miss at the moment!).
When we teach kids (and so-called adults) that it is cool to behave badly and be as low as you want, it’s little wonder they start believing it, I think…

RE: bye bye England
Snowman,
don’t be too disheartened, these people truly are the mindless majority. However, there are those among the hooligan groups who represent themselves as leaders. Many of them have respectable jobs, good families and are in it purely for the thrill of the strategy. Marshalling their troops against the opposing hooligans or the police. These are the ones who need stopping as hooligans without a leader really are a mindless bunch of thugs with no direction who are more easily routed or controlled.
I think you’re right about left footed players. It’s not that we hate them, just that we haven’t produced many good ones. I wonder whether that’s a throwback to the days in the UK when kids were punished by their teachers for being left handed or left footed. My mother was left handed and she was not allowed to use her left hand for writing (she was naturally left handed) and was then chastised because her written work was so poor with her right hand.

RE: bye bye England
Firstly, Ja, you mention incidents involving French supporters. I must say if anything’s happened, it has escaped my notice. Would you care to elaborate, please? By and large, supporters of the French national side are not renowned for their bad behaviour.
Secondly, Mongu, I’m not sure there is a hatred of left-footed players in the UK… quite the reverse, I’d have thought! I think there is merely a lack of them and the day a talented and reliable left-footed defender/midfielder emerges will, I think, be a glorious one for England.
Finally, Kev, your post makes for very sombre reading. I am currently out of the country (I am in Asia) and I therefore rely on the Internet for European news. But the tought of Hooliganism rearing its ugly head again is disheartening. It’s not even as though you can reason with these people. They just cannot handle their drinks and the drunker they get the more they revert to a primitive stage of evolution before your eyes…
I was an anglophile through and through when I settled in England and have since tried my hardest to blend in and become as English as I could. But incidents such as these make me question my decision to stay here… It is really such a relief to see that there are still true gents and ladies around, such as your good self and chaps like Jonesy among others, in many walks of life and in many places, including this board.
I think there has been a steady degradation of moral values at work in many modern countries, and I fail to see how we can invert the trend. I might sound like a an old fogey, but I really don’t think poisoning people’s minds with rubbish such as Big Brother and all the fly on the wall, warts and all, docu-soaps is going to improve matters. How can we expect our youth to uphold certain values when they see that being selfish, loud, obnoxious, cruel, unclutured and proud of it, narrow minded will enable them to get ahead in life?

RE: bye bye England
I don’t blame Seaman. I mean, he was at fault for the goal – but the other 10 men did sweet FA during the 2nd half! One of the worst efforts I have seen in a long time.
Once again, we need to question the FA about the way the game is run in terms of bringing young players through. Why do smaller countries consistently produce better players than us?
I know Brazil is a bigger country, but I was referring to the likes of Holland, even Ireland (Duff would walk into our team) and maybe Italy, Spain, Portugal.
Also, why do coaches have an abject hatered of left footers? Why are none allowed to come through?

RE: bye bye England
First of all, It’s not that disappointing that England lost. It’s the manner in which they lost that matters. I felt that they played pretty well the first half. The injury to Seaman may have contributed to the first goal. Either way it was a brilliant Brazilian move at a time when England appeared to have already decided it was half time. The second half display was very poor. Seaman was at fault for the goal, as good as it was. But everyone makes mistakes and he has had a brilliant tournament. His tears are probably at least partly because he knows he’s not going to be there in 4 years time and there is no one outstanding to replace him. Beckham, although he didn’t play well still put in the most effort. Perhaps it was the heat, the inexperience of a relatively young side, just one game too many, or more likely, the Brazilians were just the better team! No disgrace and no regrets. Let’s hope the Koreans and Senegal can put some real magic back into the tournament.
Regarding English hooligans. Don’t worry, they’re alive and well and playing at home. Last Saturday in my town there was considerable violence and unrest among England fans, who, having no one else to fight, fought happily amongst themselves. And that was after England won. A number of shop windows were broken. At 10.30 this morning they were trying to break the windows on a bus and chasing cars. They were also trying to break the same shop windows again. A few minutes later, two groups wearing England shirts were happily kicking the crap out of each other while redecorating the inside of McDonalds with their blood.
You may not be able to rely on the team but you can always rely on the hooligans!
Makes you proud to be British. (NOT)!

If Germany wins its another blow for England.Just remember our 5-1 victory over them, that was great,we really rubbed it in the Germans face. But to see Germany do better than us when we had that fantastic qualification game against them is quite dissapointing in my opinion though others may see it differently.
