Just delivered G-ASML to her new owner. Amazing how one gets attached to an aeroplane, particularly an old-fashioned old thing like the Luton.
Still she’s going to be well looked-after, on a cracking farm strip in Kent.
Now the next challenge. What does one go for next? Prime attributes are two-seats (the reason I sold the Luton), classic, taildragger, reasonable farm strip/short field performance and to not cost a fortune to run!
Aeronca? Taylorcraft? Cub? Jodel? What would you recommend?? :confused:

A good idea! They are, by all accounts, terrific aircraft, but I suspect a little to dear as a trade up from a Luton. Try ringing hairyplane and ask him the price for his spottless Magister 😀 😀
The Gemini whets my whistle, but the requirement for a Twin rating puts that even further out of reach!

The Belgian Trainer indead is no longer for sale. (And actually I’m glad at least one stays in Belgium)

Currently I don’t know one for sale, but you could ask some owners.
There’s G-AFVN that doesn’t fly anymore (perhaps the owner consideres to sell it??) and G-AFSC that also does not fly very often.

I don’t know if clipped wing Cubs are allowed in the UK but a friend and I bought one 6 months ago and it is wonderful… all the advantages of a normal Cub, no disadvantages, and add at least 50% to the fun factor. www.clippedcub.com

Thanks Simon, no disrespect, but I’m looking for something a little more vintage than a Kitfox. So far have driven about 700 miles looking at Taylorcrafts and things, haven’t quite found the right one for me….yet 🙂
Ah, I wasn’t suggesting you go for the Kitfox, I was just defending it as did wysiwyg 😉 Good value flying but certainly not vintage!
Beware of Taylorcrafts if you venture East though. I looked at one a few months ago and ….hmmm 🙁
Funnily enough, the chap I am building my plane with used to be part of a group that owned gasmantle. Small world innit! 🙂

I know of a Kitfox for sale at the moment for £9.500, reduced from about £13K. It seems an excellent price for what it is. Comes complete with trailer, fuel rig, tool kit etc, etc… uses something like 12ltrs per hour, has two seats and you can keep it in your garage! Sounds like a bargin to me.

I now know from experience last week, that in terms of peer pressure there’s nothing as scary as landing an aeroplane in front of its new owner.
Thankfully Gasmantle let me get away with a perfect three-pointer. Proving there’s always a first time!

The chap who sold his Luton Minor at our strip has now turned up with a Rand KR-2. I remember a Brittania captain commenting on a previous Rand at the strip and saying “the trim tab on my 767 is bigger than the wing on this thing”. It distinguished itself by wrapping itself up in a ball at the feet of the new purchaser at the end of the delivery flight. No harm done to the occupant but a disgruntled new owner.
