Bye-bye Spitfire SM845

Spitfire XVIII SM845/G-BUOS left Duxford today after being a growling resident since Summer 2000. It has gone to new owners in Sweden, who already operate Spitfire RW386. This leaves just the TFC MkXIV to fly the flag for Griffon power at Duxford.

I commented on the lack of Griffon Spits in the UK in an earlier post.
Although its all relative there does seem to be a “glut” of Merlins, I guess our continental & American friends appreciate the extra “legs” that the latter marks give them whereas its not such a issue in the UK.
Here’s to Rolls Royce & TFC getting their respective machines back in the air to help increase the “Big Spit” population. 🙂

I liked 845 a lot… something about that late bubble top, big rudder, huge engine ‘look’ that spoke to me. Hmmm, or was it her giving me a new parting every Legends on the tank bank!:):):D

We do seem to be lacking in the griffon department now, shame.

I’m with you, totally different beast with that look, 845 was a beauty, I’d like to think that something will replace her, and I expect she will be back for shows etc and obviously she’ll be cared for.

Yes it is a shame, pity they dont flog off other types in preference, I
would be happy for the Bearcat,Corsair, hellcat to go if it meant keeping the
griffon spits or the Airacobra.:diablo:
I hope the same thing doesn’t happen to the MK 22 when it finally resufaces.

It made a fuelstop at Eelde airport (EHGG) on the way to norway… It’s going to norway to be precise… i heared it busing over my head when i was doing some stuff at my work, i ran outside and a lovely griffon sound faded away with a glimps of this beautifull lady ;).

Here is a picture of the takeoff after the Fuelstop, Hope you like it.
