C-17 Globemaster III 'exhausts'

Ok… I know this is probably a weird question to ask, but I regularly see C-17s over Peterborough – like 6 or so a day. The routing is always East/West or West/East, the most noticible always being those coming from the west and they are usually higher than normal airways.

My question is this – anyone know why the outboard engine on the right wing (as seen with the aircraft is coming right at me) ALWAYS kicks a con-trail out away from the other three in an arc before curving back in to create the standard con-trail line?

It’s SO distinctive, there must be a reason and it’s puzzling the hell out of me!
