C-27J Gunships

I recently read where the US Forces were going to upgrade their C-130 Spectre gunships from the 70s vintage H model to the J model. I thought they had considered using the C-27J for that role since it’s big enough for battle damage tolerance and gun mounting. Do they really need a larger aircraft for the job and why did they change their minds about the C27J?
