C-27J Spartan

Recently I’ve been catching up by reading the June and July issues of AFM, and I must say I really enjoyed the European Transport Aircraft Survey article. As someone who’s interested in flying heavies (well at least the KC-135 in my case) I took great interest in the article, and I felt it was a nice change of pace from the articles that are so common in AFM these days.

Anyway, I got rather interested in the C-27J, and I did some internet research today among other things, and I found it to be a rather neat airlifter.

I was wondering what you all think about it.

I like the C-130J commonality issues (i.e. avionics and the engines) as well as the niche that the aircraft fits. I think it will make a great replacement for the scores of An-24/26, C-160 Transall, and G.222 fleets that are out there as well as for nations that need to boost their transport capabilities but don’t need something the size of a C-130J. Even for nations with the C-130 (J or otherwise) it can provide a good tactical airlift capability.

It has a really neat NVG-compatible glass cockpit (i.e. EFIS flight deck) and apparently the inclusion of a HUD is a possible item that could be added in the near future.

I understand the AMI has ordered some as well as the HAF (replacing the C-47’s among other things……quite amazing how long that bird has lasted in an air force as modern as the HAF).

Just wanted some general opinions on the Spartan (love that name too). And before anyone says it, yes I know its the same airframe as the G.222. 🙂
