C-74 Globemaster 1

Howdy folks; My name is Bob Bryan and am 66 years of age.

To start with my dad was in the USAF and at one point was stationed at Tripoli, Libya in the late 40’s to early 50’s. My entire family was there with him for 3 years. The base was Wheelus Field, my youngest sister was born there as well.

I remember going to Base Ops and watching the Lancasters, spitfires and bunches of other British aircraft taxi up and well as our own. Fabulous memories.

To the point; we flew over on a C-74 Globemaster 1 which was unable to make the trip across the Atlantic without having to stop at Lages Field in the Azores to refuel, eat, spend the night and then on the next day to two different bases there before we arrived at Wheelus.

Does anyone have any information on the C-74’s I certainly would like to hear about them.

Thanks

Bob

Yes, Tad (The Author) is a great guy. I met him a few years back when I had arranged to meet him and his private DC-3 near his home in Oregon. It’s such a coincidence that he was the chief pilot of the cow operation in Denmark back in the Sixties. I’m from Denmark and I’ve read and listened to stories about this adventure many times over the years… and then suddenly I pop into the guy who was the most involved person in that particular project. It’s a small world.

I can truly recommend the other books as well. They are all well written and gives the reader an instant feeling of what aviation could be like back in “the good ‘ol days”.

Flying Cowboys

I can really recommend reading the book “Flying Cowboys”:

http://www.authorhouse.com/BookStore/ItemDetail~bookid~21758.aspx

This story is an account of events that led to an historical first in the transportation of whole herds of up to eighty two pregnant dairy cows by airplane from Denmark to countries in the Mid East. An old military surplus cargo plane (C-74) and a crew of seven young men desperate for work were more than happy to take on the challenge no matter that the rumor mill was saying it couldn’t be done. A job was a job, and if the Danes needed to get cows delivered to Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Iran, they were going to do it, come hell or high water. The timing couldn’t have been better, with Denmark’s dire need to find a way to improve their balance of trade crisis and at a time when thousands of American airmen were out of work due the FAA’s crippling rule changes.

The most faomous apperance of a C-74 was in the 1969 film The Italian Job where it plays a chinese transport plane, sadly this was also scrapped as were all the rest 🙁 .
