C sends warnings to 11 European countries with ASAs

Full article at atwonline.com

In what could be seen as a next step in its legalistic approach to get what its wants–an Open Aviation Area between the EU and US–the European Commission announced yesterday that it has decided to send letters of formal notice and reasoned opinions to 11 member states that have air service agreements with the US.The EC, as “guardian of the [European] Treaties,” is sending letters of formal notice to Spain, Ireland, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, the Slovak Republic and Malta and second warning letters to France, Greece, Italy and Portugal to enforce the so-called open skies ruling from the Court of Justice in 2002. If the latter four do not comply within two months, the Commission can take them to the ECJ and eventually impose fines.

Finaly, the EC do something thats right.

I am not entirely in favour of open skys with the USA, they don’t seem to be prepared to to give as good as they will get. Especially when it comes to Cargo flights.

Its about time we had an open skies aggrement. I think the irish goverment are starting to reliase what a negative thing the Shannon stopover is and rumours are flying around saying they will dropped this year or early next.
Already Air Canada have decided not to come back to Dublin or Shannon this year because they cant make money when they HAVE to fly to Shannon.
United Airlines also said a few years ago they would interested in flying to Ireland but couldnt really make money due this the stopover so hopfully if its is dropped we might see another Star Allaine airline in Dublin.
