Hi Guys, a friend of mine is researching targe towing aircraft in the RAAF, he’s come across reference to the ‘c’ type winch.
He has information on a “B” Type Winch, a “D” Type Winch, a “E” Type Winch, and a “F” and “G” Type Winches but cannot find anything on a “C” Type used by the RAAF.
The “B” Type was the standard windmill style winch used on Battles, Vengeances and Beaufighters etc, and even civil Mustangs used by Fawcett’s VH-BOY and VH-BOZ, and Swedish Fireflies etc.
The “D” and “E” Type winches were powered by electric motors of .4 horsepower and .5 horsepower respectively. The “F” was a development of the old “D” Type Winch and the “G” of course we’re all familiar with as fitted to Fireflies, Tempests, Beaufighter, Mosquito and Meteor TT Mk 20 in RAF service.
But what about the “C” Type?
It was apparently fitted to RAAF Demions used in the TT role hence my friends interest. Can anyone help?
Cheers
Nick

Hi Nick,
Sounds like a pre-war one (You did say ‘Demons’ as in Hawker Demons?).
I have some copies of photos from the RAAF Museum archive of a RAAF TT Demon. The drogue boxes are visible, but not the winch.
Send me a PM to discuss.
Cheers
