C119 cockpit still looking for a home

I understand that the cockpit is still for sale as the last potential buyer was a scam artist.

Seems a pity that this once grand machine can’t find a new home.

I have done a little bit of digging and have found some of her history.

She is an ex Belgian Aircraft that flew as CP-09 51-2700 and saw service from the mid 50’s including operations in the Congo.

Picture of her in her prime:

Article on her history from Aviation World:

I have cleaned small sections of the metal and underneath the grey paint it is still very sound and uncorroded.

Someone somewhere must have the space for her!

edit – just to confirm to all – I am not the seller and not involved in the sale. Just want to see her go to a good home.

Now back from the upholsterer with new cushions and is  really quite  comfortable – moving it into my office next..

That means 5 aircraft chairs in the house at the moment.

Good to see it earning its keep still and not cut up for a crash scene as many film bits end up

Ah an excuse to rewatch some classic Red Dwarf (only to see how it looked ofc). Shoot aviation’s social media pages do post some interesting things.

Pictures of the seat and the C1119 manual. I think this is the pilots seat from the wear on the top RHS.

The date plate shows it was made for FAC in 1952.

This long range seat has recline, height and fore/aft control. I will get new cushions made.

To be fair, I did trim up some of the flapping metal work left from the original sectioning from the airframe, it was the worst job I’ve ever seen, (done I think by Hanningfield metals) the control columns were cut an ripped out leaving an 18″ hole on both sides! for years people had told me it featured in Red Dwarf, but I never caught a glimpse until after it had gone, it was used (briefly) for the interior shots of the Heinkel H111, featuring Rimmer in the “Smoke me a kipper” episode.

Just a footnote, the Wings museum, sold it on in about 2012-13 and the then owner did nothing really with it until 2019(and I should know as it was me) whereupon it was purchased by Shoot Aviation, for another go in the movie business!

Strange how I keep coming across bits of C119.

I acquired a Hurricane landing light – that turned out to be a C119 wing light.

I have just received a Weber pilots seat dated 1952. The  data plate says it was made for Fairchild and with the part number that confirms it to be a C119 pilot/co pilot seat.

Steve -maybe one of the two former RCAF C-119’s at Battle Mountain would be a better bet! One is a complete machine -the other a fuselage .

Hm, shipping of course might be an issue, but I wonder if NMRCAF at Trenton might be interested in this as an interactive exhibit…the C-119 being one RCAF type as yet unrepresented in their collection (and very Trenton-related, too, since Trenton was Transport Command HQ and remains the RCAF’s airlift hub)…

(…And then of course when you have several C-17s available, maybe shipping’s not that big of a deal either!)

Hi,

For my sins, this is my offering:D

We felt sorry for the old girl but it really doesn’t fit in with the museum which is now exclusively World War Two themed, so she needs to find a new home.

Size is a bit of an issue, we did contemplate cutting it down from just behind the pilots seat and perhaps just under the cockpit floor, that would at least make it more viable to move around to shows etc. It would reduce it to a 2.3 meter width load with an overall height of 2 meters.

There is still a fair amount of original equipment still inside with the main instrument panel with about half of the original instruments remaining, some nicely marked “fairchild” rudder pedals. Also still retains the centre console and one of the crew seats, the nose cowl is also present and is removeable. Would take too much work to bring it up to display standard.

I thought it would look good painted up as a Vietnam gun ship.

I am sure someone out there can squeeze it in! go on, ideal Father’s Day present:diablo:

What are the dimensions of it ? Scaling off a 1/72 model I make it well over 3 metre wide. I imagine this is a deterrent to some.

Anyone know how much the owners are asking for her?

If I recall when she was for sale on milweb it was 1200 including trolley….

http://www.milweb.net/classifieds/large_image.php?ad=59748&cat=38

best idea is to send a pm to redhillwings.

Agree with your Fouga and Cometguy – she would clean up very nice and be a lovely exhibit – for someone with the space.

The lower window on both sides and rear cockpit windows are faired over but would look good reglazed.

I failed to persuade the wife it was actually a green house.
