CA-15 Kangaroo versus P-51D Mustang

Somewhere I once read that the Commonwealth CA-15 Kangaroo was trialed against the P-51D Mustang. Does anybody have more details about this? I am especially interested in the serial of the Mustang used and any photos which may exist of these trials.

Thanks TT. The image is a bit outdated now though and could have been done a lot better knowing what I know now about 3D art 🙂 All part of the neverending learning curve…

TT, indeed I did: http://home.wanadoo.nl/r.j.o/skyraider/ca-15_1.htm
This was a what-if scenario for the bookcover of a book by John Baxter.

Ozhawk, I’ve not seen that book you mention, so it can’t be that. I guess it was a website or something. I must have happened upon it when I made the CA-15 3D model early in 2003.

Stewart Wilson’s Book, Wirraway, Boomerang & CA-15 in Australian Service does have a copy of a CAC report that gives comparative data CA-15, P-51D, P-51H and has charts comparing climb and speed with P-51H.

Perhaps this is where you have seen it?

Thanks for your reply, Mark. Looks like I am chasing ghosts and indeed such trials didn’t happen (unfortunately). Sometime long ago I must have read somewhere a comparisson between the P-51D and CA-15 and somehow in my memory that must have started leading a life of its own! 😀

I am not aware of any fly off trials of the CA-15 against the Mustang or other aircraft, the RAAF was alewady operating NA built P51’s and CAC was already producing its first Mustangs when the CA-15 finally flew, so there was already sufficient P51 performance details without the need to do a “fly-off”, the CA-15 underwent testing to confirm its design performances but these were on an unarmed prototype aircraft and not directly related to combat comparision with other aircraft as it was known at time of flight that the aircraft would not enter production and was already obsolete with the pending introduction of jet aircraft.
