Appears to have caught fire while on the ground, wasn’t actually airborne according to people there.

Very unfortunate, but at least no one was killed. Hopefully the serious injuries will be fully healed.
Bluebonnet Belle was the one who flew supplies to SE Texas after Hurricane Harvey dumped 1.3m (over 50 inches) of water in area.
Turning into a bad year for vintage tourist planes. 2 days ago a Ju-Air Ju 53 mysteriously crashed, loss of all on board. 🙁

No surprise there was several pieces of sheared t/w pin found. The last one I worked on had so many sheered pins back there it probably affected the W&B.

If you view the youtube link frame by frame you can see the lock ring getting launched away from the aircraft!

Found a lovely hi-res photo of the F7F wheel. Sure enough, split bead not split rim.
So the outboard bead is removable to allow for tyre changes. It is held on with a steel lock ring that locates in a groove in the wheel hub and in the bead. The lockring is often locked itself, either with a plate type lock (Meatbox??) or lockwire.
Problem is there is a LOT of stress on that poor little groove. Any corrosion or damage and, well, you see what can happen. Glad everyone is Ok.

Well, most of the wheel stayed on. The outboard side bead departed rapidly off the screen and hopefully didn’t go too far.
Split bead wheel on the Tigercat? I thought it was a split rim wheel.

Wheel stayed on, tire departed.
By: DH82EH - 24th July 2018 at 22:15
That’s really quite lucky.
If the wheel had departed on touchdown, the aircraft would have certainly left the runway, leading to who knows what.
They got off light with that one fortunately.

I guess Slattery has decided that we’ve all forgotten that his collection was funded by tax payers & peoples pension funds & it’s time to display them again.

This has been a bad month for old props. Add this crash to the Convair that crashed at Wonderboom, a C-46 that made a forced landing at Manley Hot Springs Airport in Alaska, and a DC-3 that ran off the runway at San Felipe Airport in Colombia in the last month.
