Calling Spitfire Expert

Probably for Mark12…..but you other chaps are clever too! I have a Spitfire undercarriage door part marked ‘337 and a load of other numbers’, hoping it is off a Mk IV Spit, it has been well shot up as it was a range target, my questions are:-

Is it Mk IV?
Or did Spits of subsequent marks use ‘older’ marked parts? i.e. could a Mk12 have MkIV marked parts?
The door top is quite unlike other Spit doors on other marks I have/have seen.

Which marks of Spit ended their days on Salisbury Plain as range targets?

I agree.We have found MkVII part numbers in amongst our parts even though the Raaf didn,t have them in service.Many MkI parts carried over right through the series.

The ex Franco Actis Spit Mk VIII supposedly had a Mk VII wing fitted.

part id

According to my records part number 337 was first introduced for MkIV Spit but of coarse it could have continued in later Mks unless the part was modified again. I have uploaded picture from a MK XIX if you tell me the number of the part you have in the drawing ill look up the part number for comparison.

No, it doesnt tell you what Mark it came from, it tells you what mark it was designed for.

The Mk24 and 46 have plenty of 300 parts – originally designed for the Mk1

Several Curtiss Tomahawk ended up on the plain as targets so if its not Spitfire then perhaps the part numbers will match those.

“The History” tells me that there were only two, prototype “Mk.IV” Spits, which were adapted as Mk.XII and Mk.21 prototypes respectively. If that helps at all.
