This is the start of a painting im working on.. Ive been building the model of the S6b on n off for the last few weeks. Its to help get the different angle on the aircraft but also in colour… As you may be able to see the aircraft is “”Running in”” (This may turn out to be the title?) towards Calshot..
All i have is a few grainy shots of the sheds/hangers from that period but nothing to guage the colour of the roofs at that period of time. Although they may be small in detail they will be in the eye follow through line so i would like to be as accurate as possable.
The lighting on the finished aircraft will be far different to the photo of the model in the photo..

Cheers mate. Thats why i take so ruddy long doing a painting. Trying to depict a scene unphotographed is usually my aim. Ive a Harrier GR3 on the go which isnt going to be hugely itenesive on the reasearch side but as im doing that im researching some WW2 RAF Rednal 61otu stuff which is my closest RAF station. Not many pictures of the aircraft and airfield exist so im gona be bringing it back to life with a flypast of Spits as viewed from within the formation 😀

Fantastic work there Rob, nice to see the research going into it as well:)

“”RUNNING IN””
All done n dusted now apart from signing it..
Many thanks to those who have helped point me in the right directions over some of the details and thanks to everyone who took time out and posted pictures to help me see my way 😉 .
In time i will take it to print but this is something ive not done for a long time and never with a colour picture. After all this is only my 5th ever painting 🙂

Ive some tidying up to do with the rays of light to get the angle shifted around a half inch or so then it should start to work. Trouble with this is the sun is right out off view and as you say the light is diffused making refence difficult. Im not actually working a single photo but about 30, The sky and sea are from my imagination though and ive gone where the painting has taken me to a certain extent but have tried to place everything in the right place within reason 😉
Thanks for the compliments by the way.

Pistonrob, very creditable work, and I’ve only just read the threads so it might have been better if I’d pointed this out at an earlier stage, but too late : you’ve gone for a view of the aircraft from a position above, behind and slightly to the right of the subject. Imagine holding a camera looking at the subject from this viewpoint then the light source (looks like a watery sun) would have the rays albeit diffused and weak, pointing directly towards the camera lens (or your eyes if you’d rather), not angled (ever so slightly to the left of the picture) as you have done. I had something similar pointed out to me many moons ago and it stuck, as well as the admonition from an art tutor that ‘You’ll never make any money painting aircraft!’ Excellent work in progress, and forgive a somewhat pedantic critique, wishing to encourage not dishearten.;)

Very sharp image. What medium are you painting in? When you do the markings don’t forget the white trestle position parallel stripes on the outboard side of the starboard float.

Had to change the position of the cheat line that runs the length of the body as it was too low. Pain in the back side to sort but done now.. Ive a few details to add like the numbers and horn mass balances but im pretty much there. Another 2 or 3 hours and then i can start my next picture. I think its going to be Harrier GR3 in the hover amongst dust n dirt flying up as it leaves its hide somewhere in Germany 😀

Thank you. There`s plenty of challenges i set myself with this painting. Each time i put the brush to canvas its something new. As ive mentioned before im letting the painting guide me as it goes along now.

Just an update
Had a break from the painting over crimbo but during that time the stb wing started to bug me when i realized i had gone and made it too thick. I was left with the difficult task of chopping it back and then blending the background in again. Sod of a job but thats done now.. Along with that ive been adding details in the main around the cockpit and tail area`s. These 2 small area`s took about 3 hours of extra work
Its coming along nicely though

Just another update.. Ive got a 2 day break from it now due to school plays and work.. I started on the floats 1st and that took 3 attempts at thrashing paint around until i got somewhere im happy`ish with.. Ive still got a long long way to go yet and each flick of the brush is a learning curve as this is only my 5th painting ever.
Thanks again to all the help and picture info 😉

..Couple more for you, variations on the theme, the ‘7’ and serial number a bit of a moving target!

Hi Rob,
They changed the rudder to a lighter fabric covered version quite late on, at that point the balance weight horn was moved up, as was the registration. The small ground-adjustable trim tab was added to all the aircraft. It probably won’t show on your painting because of the angle but there are small trim strips on the elevators too, full span.
Cheers
Ralph

…. a rear view similar to that in your painting. This is the S6 in 1929 so differing in small details
