Cambridge – Marshalls – Mildenhall

BBC Radio Suffolk this morning. Report on Marshalls moving the ‘military’ side of their operation from the historic site in Cambridge onto Mildenhall airbase.

Looks like another great and iconic airfield is about to be covered with houses?

Thin end / wedge

Only just seen this thread!
I live in the nice village of teversham with a great view over the airfield.
As far as “us locals” have been informed, marshalls is in fact very reluctant to move.
It`s in fact local goverment that “wish” marshalls to move, but with oakington due soon to go under a new town and waterbeach being sited again for a new town it looks like the presure to move may be off for a little while longer.
Local villagers used to complain about aircraft noise, but now a vast campaign is under way to see that the airport stays.
In fact the main noise group against the airport as turned full circle and now supports the airport to stay!!
I sure im not the only resident that prefers the sight and sound of tiger moths than the hustle and bustle of 1000`s of new homes!

And the Who are at Wyton! When the Duxford proposal was first mooted, along with all the other whispers, it was said that Sir Arthur wouldn’t go anywhere unless it involved him and his employees in zero expense. In other words one of your relocation packages, Yak11, and it would be a brave developer who would take that on. Mind you when you fly over the airport it is a big chunk of real estate in a very tempting position. Pity there’s no infrastructure, which may yet be the “lifesaver” for the airport.

Apparently Marshalls have said that Duxford is not an option according to local radio..

Status Quo are at Alconbury????

I would think that Marshalls may be keen to stay local to Cambridge as the cost and disruption of relocating or loosing their employees may become an issue. Who knows, stranger things have happened. I have first hand experience of relocating a Manufacturing company from the East Anglian coast to the South Coast and despite offering generous relocation packages only around 10% relocated. I then made everyone else, including myself redundant….. Nice job for someone I guess…..

Look East last night had just the Specialised Vehicle Unit moving and as far as I know they don’t fly. I hear that the RAF are not keen on moving out of Wyton as it backs up the Logistics Group at Brampton and in any case the peritracks and infrastructure are not up to Alconbury’s standard. So status quo for a bit longer.

I tend to agree with you Madam.

From what I’ve read it seems that this latest round of muttering has been prompted by a release from the MoD about Mildenhall, rather than Marshalls flying their kite.

This time, plans are rather better developed, so my friend close to the Marshall family tells me. Expect to see rather a lot of pokey little houses on 23/05 within the next few years. That’ll make for even longer queues getting off the A14 in the morning.

Oh well!

They’ve got two much closer and available alternatives at Wyton and Alconbury, both of which are also very well placed for road and rail access. My gut feel suggests Wyton would be the most feasible of the two *if* Marshalls head that way, as there is a very long running public campaign in Huntingdon against any kind of re-activation for Alconbury. Odd that the locals didn’t complain one jot when Alconbury was providing a critical part of our NATO defences… 😉

Can’t think why I didn’t post on this subject before, as we had quite a detailed piece in our local rag about how Duxford had politely but firmly said No to Marshall’s taking up residence there. Think the quote was somewhere along the lines of the Museum had “pledged to forcefully resist” any attempt by Marshall’s to move in to Duxford. Good on ’em. 🙂 Unfortunately I think the article has long since gone under the guinea pigs…

For those of us who fly from Cambridge, none of this comes as any surprise. Old Arthur Marshall hates GA, sees us as a nuisance and wants us gone. We’re getting in the way of his bizjets and maintenance contracts. Shame really, as the flying schools at Cambridge are wonderful folks and really do deserve better.

This story is on Ceefax today as well. Why don’ they move to Coltishall when that closes? A bit of a distance from Cambridge I accept and the neighbours might complain, I guess, but it will be a pefectly good, unused airfield.

Quite so, but it does highlight Marshall’s eagerness to get the existing field covered in bricks and mortar.

One day they’ll get their way. 🙁
