I got a camera just before Christmas, you may remember I seen some of my pictures I posted.I have Pentax Espio 170SL.It has done me good but its not really a good camera for taking pictures of aircraft with beause of the lens sizes, the paircrft just seem to far away. This has meant I can only take pictures in one certin place to get any of quite good quality. So I have come to the decision that I will get a new one geared up more for what I want to use it for.Trouble is I have not got a clue what is good and what is not so I really need help with getting a goodish camera.I know they are a lot of money which is really putting me off because I know my parents will not fork out £800 to £2000 just on a camera,so how about getting a second hand one?I really need some help and tips. Thanks!

RE: Camera’s
Zoom lenses don’t have to be expensive, I used a 35-200mm lens made by Sun and when I was interested in purchasing one, I knew they would be pricey. I had a good look around at Jessops etc and found that the London Camera Exchange came top. Top notch photographic gear for SLR users (i.e. me) and I picked up this lens for just £49 and it came with a six month guarantee, so I was pleased with my purchase. I would recommend second hand but buy from a shop you know, one with a reputation and make sure there is a guarantee with your purchase so if anything should go wrong, you’re covered.

Saab – I use the Canon Eos300 also. I bought a package deal which cost
£400 from Dixons. This included a 28-80 lens and a 75-300 lens which will I am sure cover everything you need. The package now retails for
£380 and I seriously recommend it.

RE: Camera’s
I’ve got a Pentax Z-50p and have had nothing but good results with it, to my eyes at least anyway. As an indication of second hand value I saw one recently in a local camera shop for £250 complete with a 35-80mm zoom, while this lense is fine for static aircraft, cockpit shots etc, like Dan330 says you will need at least a 200mm zoom and these can be found second hand for around £70 basically its gonna cost a few bob to get set up but the results should be worth it.
Regards, Dazza. 🙂

RE: Camera’s
Is your Pentax an SLR? Why not just get a new zoom lens if so? Otherwise I have a Canon EOS 300 which was around the £200 mark and its quite a good camera. If you want to use it for aviation photography then your going to need a long lens, at least 200-300mm which cost quite a bit. My advice would be to nip down to your local Jessops and have a word with them, they also sell a lot of used stuff. One other word, use them for the advice and get a few makes and models, but if you want to buy a new camera I can give you a few websites that will probably be a lot cheaper.
I bough one recently that was £500 in Jessops, but after searching the web I got it for £372! (£128 difference!)
