This came from a collection of Lancaster memorabilia but it definitely isn’t from a Merlin.
It’s approximately 140mm/5.5” bore, flat-topped with three rings (two compression, one oil-control).
Any ideas?

Yes, the valve number and arrangement are the dead-giveaway…two, inclined…
…as opposed to four, flat (well, nearly) for the DB601/DB605.
Looks like a Pratt & Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp radial piston to me (DC-3 / B-24).
At least you haven’t lost your sense of humour over it…and hope it didn’t cost you too much.
I cant remember what i paid for it, i always work on buyer beware principal on purchases its rare i buy something if i dont know what it is, that way I don’t get caught out to often. This really was a blantant bit of miss information but without the paperwork to back it up i wont have paid much.

Excellent…I’m sure a lot of forum members, like me, would love to hear more, and see some photos.
Good luck, and I hope somebody here can help you with the parts you need.

Napier Lion
Hi Creaking Door, I am rebuilding a 1926 Lion Va to ground run, it is a very interesting engine.
I already ground run an Alvis Leonides from a Bristol Sycamore, although it now has a prop and runs as a fixed wing type engine.
If anybody has any Lion parts please get in touch.
Thanks.
Andy

Amazing I wonder how it picked up the History I was given LOL

A 2 valve hemi, if aero, it’s more likely to be from a radial.

Sorry, not a Bf109 piston…it’s American. 😮

Maybe its not so similar LOL. This Piston is believed to be from an ME 109. I Was told that this piston came from an ME 109 shot down by F/O Feric of 303 Sdr in September 1940.

Thanks Andy, nice to have it finally confirmed!
I’ve got to ask why you are after Napier Lion parts; are you rebuilding one…to run…and in what?
Post a picture and I’ll have a guess. 😀

I should have said it definitely isn’t from a Lancaster!
You are quite correct about the MkII Lancaster of course but a Hercules piston is bigger (5.75”) and looks like this…
…except it wouldn’t be green.
Thanks for trying.

Unless it was running in Duckhams oil!

Napier Lion piston
Hi Creaking door, you have a Napier Lion piston, or half of one !
The gudgeon pin oil hole is for the fully floating pin with end wear buttons.
I am looking for Lion parts including Hobson updraught carbs, coolant pipework, a test club and just about any other parts available.
Thanks.

A couple more pictures of this mystery piston.
Assuming the following I’m hoping it’s a Napier Lion piston.
It’s not a Lancaster piston but is probably British and has been cut-down into an ashtray by an RAF engine fitter in the traditional way.
It’s the correct bore and has the correct number of rings. It also has a very distinctive oil hole to lubricate the gudgeon pin (see photo with screwdriver).
Anybody know different?
