Can anyone help-Eugene Cramer?

My grandfather flew with the 8th air force in WWII and was shot down in his B-17 on his very first mission, in what I believe might have been an early model ‘D’ tailed B-17 without tail guns… apparently a Messerschmitt hit them from below and disabled the plane and they hit the Messer and shot it down at the same time, it blew up, and he carried a piece of this plane in the palm of his hand (internally) until he died three years ago…his name was Eugene Cramer and he will probably be listed as being from New York…..I’m curious to see what you sleuths can come up with…he spent the remainder of the war a POW.

Hi Mark,

Try the link below and post your question there. If you don’t get a result there you probably won’t get a result anywhere.

The name Eugene Cramer rings a distant bell for me, I will check later to see if he was attached to the 306th

Good Luck

Sorry – as far as I can tell no B-17Ds served in Europe, and the only B-17Cs here were the RAFs Fortress Is.
Looks like he was aboard a B-17E…
