hello can anyone help with Abbreviations in a RAF service release book for a Cpl N.Smith. Dating from 20.8.40 (battle of Britain period) to 24.4.46.
The abbreviation regarding his Trade reads Clk/ Gp or Gd (M.C.)
i would imagine Clk = Clerk
Gd = General Duties
But its the (M.C.) that i cant seem to trace.
Any help as always appreciated.

If his last unit/station is not in his release book?
It wil cost at least £30 for his Service Record, but at least you will know his service from joinup to discharge.

So if its Marine Craft what sort of duty’s would you hazard a guess at, he would of been 31 years old as born in 1909.like you say it does read Marine Craft on the RAF abbreviations section.he was also an N.C.O.
The Certificate of Service and Release was signed by a Squadron Leader, not sure if that may throw in some light.

As above, his location would help solve the quiz.
Marine Craft had their own set up with Headquarters, Flights etc.
Bridlington in 1970 had clerks, medics as well as coxwain and crews. Us at Leconfield were the odd survivors chucked in the water by Whirlwind helicopters of 202 Sqn B Flt before being rescued by the marine craft. Oh what fun:rolleyes:

AHB & RAF Personnel Records Centre give ‘MC’ as = Marine Craft (also Military Cross, though clearly not that in this context) under the “List of Common Abbreviations” supplied with Record of Service docs.

Thanks for all your reply’s,ref (Tangmere 1940)it definitely reads (M.C.)
I guess it could be some of the other suggestions, but what i cant understand is why it would have Clk/Gd before the (M.C.) maybe he was employed for 2 Duties? i would of thought the Clerk would of been some sort of Clerical division.

Usually if you see MC it = Military Cross
But:
(Mc) was an abbreviation for ‘Marine Craft Officer’.

Be careful!! Thay might mean something bad.
My old charge hand had a shaky start in the Navy and one entry on his service card was “D.R” Decline to report. A few years later another officer asked him what DR ment. Quick as a flash he replied “Definitely Reliable”!!!!

Could be Marine Craft.
Or are you sure it isn’t MU? (= Maintenance Unit)
