Hi all. Some nuts and bolts shown on a drawing I have, as example, are A.17 12c,A.16 c.p,AGS 970 c,D.s5 de 92c and the last one says lock to D.S 147. Each set of numbers are in a circle. Could anyone please tell me what they mean.
Many thanks for any help.

Yes, thanks Bruce.
It looks like I need a early version of Brown Brothers catalogue is what I need. It’s all much more complicated than I thought it would be!

Every company had their own standards, as well as using the standard A/AS/AGS standards as referenced by Brown Brothers.
DH had DHS
Vickers had VGS
There are plenty more (including German ones!)

Hi Ken,
I have numerous Brown Brothers (Aircraft) Ltd catalogues, the one I took the above information from is un-dated(I would guess at mid 50’s to early 60’s) but is Catalogue No 526. This one lists the earlier (but not earliest) AGS items that have been superseeded and therefore are not included in the later Brown Brothers and BAS version of the catalogue as well as aerodrome equipment and stores, metals and information on Oddie nuts. The only electronic copy of the Brown Brothers catalogue I have seen available is the one Bruce has made available and is referenced on the Chilton Aircraft website.
I haven’t come across any printed information on the Vickers (VGS) hardware used, and don’t have any Vickers publications to see if any information is included within them. The only VGS items I have come across recently have all been unified thread, mostly hex head bolts of the VGS7000 series, which I would imagine are a little later than you are looking for.
Sorry not much more information.
Regards
Dave

Hi there,
The part numbers you have quoted can be de-ciphered as follows:
A17-12C = Aluminium Alloy Bolt 2BA thread with plain length of 1.2″ anodised finish (replaced by A28, which in turn has been replaced by A61)
A16CP = Ordinary 2BA Plain Nut
AGS970C= 2BA Light Alloy Plain Washer
The other numbers mentioned would probably be references to the manufacturer’s own ‘standard practices’ or Design/Data Sheet. The locking could take the form of peening the protruding end of the bolt to lock, or cutting/filing flush and centre punching the join of the threads for nut and bolt. Percival Aircraft for instance use DS114 for locking the nut/bolt by peening. This is contained in leaflet DC-01-02 of the Drawing Office Handbook.
Hope this is of interest.

Dave

Hi John.
Thank you for that but I can’t find any numbers that I have quoted in the Brown Brothers list?
Any idea what the “lock to” number refers to?
