I think it was glycol, although I stand to be corrected on that one!

I seem to remember that Don Kingaby of 92 Sqn expected his engine to expire when glycol got into the cockpit during one combat over the Channel. After landing he found that the windscreen de-icer system had sprung a leak.

What actual substance/liquid did they put in it? Or would it have been banned nowadays (let alone under the Geneva Convention) under more diktats from the EU than you could shake a stick at tom-cats in a fish-market on a Sunday?
