i found this picture aaages ago and cant remember where from.
does anyone know what squadron/unit it is from and does anyone have a picture of the plane (or at least know what plane this is on)

Been thinking a little more on this I would suggest you try it on the Modern Military Aviation Forum. There are quite a few knowledgeable characters on there and Historic Aviation, maybe you’ll get more sense from them than you will from me.

That looks suspiciously like the kind of think you’d see on an A-10 can’t help with a unit ID though, sorry
