3 Missing Spitfires in India (nearly in Burma)

The text from page 19 of Peter Vacher’s book “Hurricane R4118” referring to 1996.

“We were warmly welcomed by Wing Commander Joseph Sekhar at the Bihta Air Force Base near Patna. …There was great excitement as we were driven down the massive runway to greet two microlights whose pilots were flying from from Delhi to Calcutta. We had singularly failed to find any trace of a Hurricane at the air base but one of the microlight pilots told us of three Spitfires he had personally seen in the jungle adjacent to Burma. He suggested we might like to contact the 8th Assam Rifles Regiment in Shillong from where we could lead an expedition of recovery. O adventurous reader, the Spitfires are certainly still there! However, for your proection you might also like to take the 12th and 15th Assam Rifles with you.”

I have done a thread check and I can’t find this one posted before. Happy hunting. I have got us as close to Burma as I can.

The Horsemen cometh to Duxford for May and Legends shows and are bringing 3 x P38’s with them. As its also the 70th Anniversary of the 8thUSAAAF arriving in East Anglia the Collins Foundation are bringing B-17 Flying Fortress “Nine 0 Nine”, B-24 Liberator “Witchcraft”,P- 51 Mustang “Betty Jane” over to. Now just brought advanced tickets for both 😀

From what I recall there was not be much usable space under floor in Concordes because of the carrythrough of the numerous wing spars.

That would be 002. This example had bits attached in various external locations for trails purposes. These were the “bonkers” – externally attached explosive charges used to try and make the airframe vibrate so that the damping response could be measured. Perhaps this suggested to some people “bomb bay”, although in fact nothing was droppable and in any case the charges were quite small.

NEEMA Snr. was responsible technically for 002 from its delivery to Yeovilton, up to and beyond its preparation for fitness as a static display item for access by the general public. (002 Sqn -check in!).
Anybody who has actually been under the floor in said item like to comment?

There is supposed to be a fuselage (DH Dove?) buried at the end of the runway at Farnborough. The way i heard the story, it was used to reinforce the bank of the Basingstoke canal during work to repair a breach where it runs past the end of the runway. Anyone have anymore info?

Possibly also filled with concrete, so won’t be much use to anyone.

This is small insular, stuff, chaps.

The real prize lies in Russia. A recent issue of the AIR BRITAIN magazine made reference to it. A secret reserve collection of about 100 Second World War aircraft, hangared since 1945. An “airplane GULAG”. Over 30 years ago, I was told about it on a “nudge, nudge, wink, wink, say no more” not for attribution basis by an individual who claimed to have seen photographs taken while they were moving airplanes out of the hangar to reposition them, and one was an Albemarle, still on its tricycle gear.

So, our Russian friends need to stop looking in lakes and see what’s in the hangars.

Spitfire under carriage legs sticking out of the mounds surrounding the hangers at Boscombe Down…wrecking the strimmers of the workers clearing the weeds. Maybe Rocketeer can confirm this ??

What about all the wreckage from Typhoons, Tempests and Spitfires which was bulldozed into ditches and craters all over airfields in Holland in 1945 after the January 1st attacks by the Luftwaffe, some may still be there and not too far below the surface.
I was told about this by a ex 137 sqdn fitter a few years ago who lived in Solihull, West Midlands who was there at the time.

I haven`t enough time to do what I want as it is.. without taking on anything else Andy. My friend did as much asking about as he could but is also very busy.He was quite adamant this thing exists though,.. in one of two rooms with heavy steel doors (blast) I`m sure he mentioned it was under the drawing offices rather than the factory.It is interesting that it is just a carpark…maybe they couldn`t build on it `for some reason`.
