Breaking News: Kosovo Clash Leaves Two Dead, Several Injured
MITROVICA, Kosovo, Serbia-Montenegro — The worst clash between Serbs and Albanians in Kosovo in over a year left at least two Albanians dead and several injured Wednesday (17 March) in the ethnically divided city of Mitrovica. Shootings were still being reported two hours after UN police and NATO peacekeepers moved in, using teargas and rubber bullets to disperse protesters and setting up a roadblock on the bridge separating the two communities.Tensions flared after two Albanian boys drowned in the Ibar after allegedly being hounded by Serbs. A third child is still missing.
In a separate incident near Pristina, several hundred Serbs set a car ablaze and threw stones at UN police in KFOR in a riot that erupted after Serb teenager was shot and wounded late Monday. The protesters also blocked the main road between Pristina and Skopje, demanding an investigation and the reinstatement of checkpoints near the village. The 19-year-old victim, Jovica Imvic, was rushed to hospital with gunshot wounds. The government of Serbia-Montenegro has filed a formal protest with the UN Security Council in New York. It’s not the Serbians that caused world war one, it’s nationalism, in all European states, including France, Russia and even Holland-Belgium. The killing of Frans-Ferdinand was just a reason to start something which could not been avoided anyway. Blaming Serbia for that war is childish, you can also blame Austria-Hungary for occupying the country.
In the meanwhile I hate to see this new uprising of violence. More NATO-soldiers should be send to the area, but in the long run, it will depend on the people themselves. NATO/EU can’t police the Balkans for another 10 years if the parties don’t do anything about it themselves. And this shows once again peacekeepers are necessairy, and though people like Bush and Zapataro think bringing back troops is a solution, this proves them wrong. And that the old Europe is not a bunch of cowards, because it were French/Belgian troops who helped restoring peace yesterday.
Actually what wouldn’t it be usefull to have a permanent UN-peacekeeping force which can be deployed within days wherever necessairy? I know this is politically almost impossible, but still, the idea could be usefull.

Calm down folks.
Read a little bit your history books. I guess it’s bit too easy to group serbian people with their dictatorial governement.
Yougoslavia history is quite ectic and good guys today might have been the bad guys a few decades ago.
Balkan’s situation is almost as complicated as Palestine.
It doesn’t excuse the horrible slaughters which took place there but noting is totally white or black there neither…

My point was that you cannot justify your position by pasting a story that says different. If (god forbid!) I was a football supporter and put up a story that said Manchester United were the best team in the league and used that to prove my point that Manchester City were in fact the best then I would be suitably labelled a prat; and what is the difference here? Or Nikon are the best cameras because Canon have had more sales?
It is too lazy and proves nothing.
As for the Balkan problem: I haven’t got a clue about which side is worse than the other – but then they are all as bad as each other and nobody has come out of it smelling of roses, including the UN.
When will we be seeing forum members from both sides boasting about their side ethnically cleansing the most of the opposition, bayoneting school kids, raping old women, mortaring crowds in market squares, sniping civilians, etc, etc, etc. Or is that just the others sides propaganda too? – Nermal

The Serbs have indeed had a bad press. You read more independent things about what went on in Kosovo – Serb farmers massacred by KLA terrorists, Serb nuns raped by KLA terrorists, ordinary Serbs attacked by KLA terrorists. When the Serbs retaliated against terrorism committed against them they were bombed by the US and the UK (a campaign which I strongly objected to, the Serbs have every right to deal with terrorism). The US and UK were wrong to go in and support a terrorist organisation such as the KLA.
