WOW I did not expect so many replies in such a short time, and as for hogging the thread I asked the question and you guys are giving answers no problem. As for posting the Furious photos I’ll ask my uncle for scans to post for you.

Thanks for ID.

‘R’ Class.

Station357
thanks for that.
That’s a very handsome print indeed.
If I had more than a square inch of wall space left I’d consider that.
Cheers

It is probably S1455 of 822NAS – from Air Britains Fleet Air Arm Aircraft and Units 1920-1939. S1455 was 703 with the squadron and the latter numbers usually stayed when the initial number changed (in 9/1935) from 7xx to 9xx, all on a red diagonal background.
In June 1936 the Fairey IIIFs on the squadron were replaced by Seals – these and the following Sharks and Swordfish all having the same 901-912 code sequence on a red diagonal background until 1/39. S1455 then went to RAE Farnborough – by 2/10/36 – were it was SOC as a catapult dummy 30/11/36, beyond repair.

If you would like to see a splendid oil painting by Ivan Berryman depicting HMS Revenge, HMS Furious and Fairey III’s at Grand Harbour, Malta, check the link here:

Peter
Blackburn Baffins I think.
You can also see her battlecruiser heritage.

Carriers…

Hi Peter
when ships and aircraft come together I’m happiest of all.
HMS Furious had a very long career.

Fairey IIIF.

I agree Fairey IIIF.
Newboy would you mind posting the picture of HMS Furious you mentioned–please.
I know it’s a bit Off Topic but I like ships as much as aeroplanes.
All the best
Andy Jones 🙂 🙂 🙂

Even extreme measures with Photoshop didn’t bring up anything that looked like a serial.
BTW my intense interest comes from the fact that my late father may have worked on this aircraft! He was in the Fleet Air Arm as a rigger on loan from the RAF before and during WW2.

.there you guys go again! Before I get a chance to reply you’ve ‘enhanced’ the photo….I’m just too slo-o-o-w-w-w!! Looks like the serial’s on the rear fuselage though…any chance of a little more tweaking?

You’re right, bms44, should have enhanced the fin first then looked at it instead of making my Seal guess! It looked rounded to me at first. I agree with IIIF now, especially as I don’t have good references to find out any more.
I can fiddle around a bit more with Photoshop but I think the serial is under the tailplane from this view.

Forum stalwart!

…course you are Papa Lima…didn’t mean to exclude you (or offend you!)…but rudder shape indicates IIIF,sloping to rear at top 1/3 section.Seal had forward sloping rudder top section.Surprised that no national marking stripes on rudder, and wonder if anyone can attempt to enhance the photo, perhaps serial is on tail fin? 🙂

Someone was probably hanging their washing out to dry on deck and forgot to remove it!
Reminds me of those message pick-up contraptions that used to be on army co-operation aircraft.

What’s dangling from the port lower wing?

Mystery biplane

This gives a better view of the fin, with a bit of help from Photoshop . . .

From what I can see of the fin shape, it can’t be a Fairey III model!

There were several fin and rudder iterations.
