Can you help the Comet project

Hi All

I hope the moderators will let this post run as it is directly related to the restoration of DH88 Comet ‘Black Magic’

The woodwork on the fuselage is about complete as we have finished the new top fuselage tank bay covers. The web site for those who havent seen it yet is http://www.cometracer.co.uk but I have to say it is now slightly out of date and I will speak to the volunteer who looks after it about uploading the latest info and pictures

We have now reached the stage where we are looking to start to build the wings and need to get the spruce we have machined to size for the main spars and outer planking. We do have a large planer thicknesser but are looking for a large bandsaw (the very large ones seemed to be called a re-saw) to cut the spruce baulks down to size. We have been looking on the web and e-bay of course but nothing at a sensible price and I wonder if any of the forum members know of one that might be for sale.

I hope with all the forum members contacts somone can help

many thanks

Ken

I used a friend who is a cabnet maker, who had a workshop early last year. To cut some spruce. But he had to go to work for another company, when work dried up. We use a small saw which is part of a Kitty thickness planer. But it dosn’t cut large bulks of wood.

Hello Rad,

Thanks for the suggestions, there are local timber companies who can machine it for us but its the problem of transporting baulks of spruce 30ft long, I actually took a smaller baulk (20ft by 6″ x 4″) on my roof rack last year which stuck over the ends of the car a bit, and it took best part of half a day out of my time to get it done, which is why we would like our own on site so we can cut wood when we like.

We have found a local chap who sells used machines and he is coming to see us to discuss what we need and if he can help.

Ken, Just a suggestion… is it worth putting an appeal out to any nearby building companies who have their own Joinery facilities to cut the wood for you, through local or the national press?

Or try Boulton & Paul, who I believe now exist as a joinery.

All the best Rad

We havent decided on any specific open days yet but you can visit at any time as the airfiled is open 7 days a week. Last year we had plans to try and have an engine running but the friend who promised to make us the running stand let us down and it didnt happen.

I will ask about the next open day when we usually have the old news reel running of the race which are very interesting and post them as soon as I know
