Can anyone identify where this photograph was taken also maybe when? looks like it is a RAF base mid 30s I guess and is it a puss moth?

Whoops – forgot to mention that 500 Sqn and its Hinds was based at Manston, from 16/3/31 until it moved to Detling on 28/9/38…
Can’t find anything about 1 ASU, though.

The aircraft on the right is a Hawker Hind of 500 Sqn – sent to the SAAF on 10.06.40.

The a/c on the left is indeed a Wallace.

Bit of a long shot but if you approach Hendon and ask for copies of the movement cards for these aircraft, you may get some clues at to the airfield – may have been that they were based there.

K6709 – Hind: del’d 15/2/37 to 500 Sqn; 8 MU 8/7/39; 52 MU 14/5/40; SAAF as 159 10/6/40. SOC 30/9/43
K8676 – Wallace: del’d 1 ASU 6/7/36; Practise Flt Manston 14/11/36; undershot landing Manston 2/5/39; to 1491M at 5SoTT 7/6/39. [338.15hrs]
BUT
Air Britains The K File (where I got all this info from:)) has this picture of K8676 which is dated May 1937, taken at Manston… Anybody think the buildings in the background look familiar?;)

I’d guess it’s a Wallace wingtip on the left – but the Hawker on the right beats me. Flood, where’s your reggie books please?
Cheers
James

PS: I have a niggle in the back of my mind that ‘Pamela’ was the name of someone’s record breaking Moth… Hmmmm.

G-ABNS = DH.80A Puss Moth c/n2178, put on civil register June 1931, destroyed by bombs at Manston August 1940. Info found in ‘British Civil Registers 1919-1999’ Air Britain Publications.
