Canadian Home Defence Hurricanes

OK Chaps,

Sometimes the internet just ain’t good enough.

For reasons that are far too silly to mention here, I need to find some photos of Home Defence Hurricanes in Canada during WW2. Don’t try trawling the web, been there, done that and seen pretty well all of them (well, what there are) but I am looking for images that may not have been psoted up. Any of you Canadian chappies able to help?

There were about seven home defence squadrons although some of those did get sent to Europe around the time of D Day.

Oh, Spitfire.

Get hold of a copy of ‘Captain of The Clouds’, starring James Cagney, available on VHS from Amazon and featuring colour footage of Hurricane units.

All I am after is pics of Home Defence Hurricanes.

A Statement:

I, Melvyn Hiscock, am not about to buy all of Canadas remaining Hurricanes and have them ready for the next Legends display. Nor do I own any of the others or have any say in what happens to them.

I am way too lazy to give a **** if you shout at me for removing Canada’s heritage. This is because I didn’t. OK

Also, much as I love a good derelict aeroplane I am also not that interested in post WW2 wrecks.

It is probably more than 25 years since Jack Arnold sent me a whole bunch of snaps of the several Hurricanes he had recovered from the ‘boonies’ within trucking distance of his facility at Brantford, Ontario.

This was all well pre ‘Hawker Restorations’ and indeed Russian recoveries. It just looked like an impossible collection on jumbled centre sections and tube work.

Has anybody recorded what happened to them and did they have serial provenance?

Watch out for those Canadians, when I tried to find out more about HAC’s Hurricane I was sent hate emails and letters from some rather irate people. You’ve been warned.

Here are a few shots of Cdn Hurricanes that I have handy on this computer.
I would have to look up the files to see if I had any further shots.
During the war Cdn Hurricanes were based all over the country from Torbay Newfoundland to Pat Bay Vancouver island, not only with the home defense squadrons, but every where else. It seems every major base had a Hurricane or two floating around. Aslo OTU in Bagotville PQ was a major user. I have seen a picture of a tropical filter Hurricane at Bagotville sitting in the snow!

If you let me know if you need something specific. The Canadian Hurricane expert is probably Jerry Vernon, he has done a lot of research on them, he maybe worth gettting in touch with.
I have also helped to pull a Sea Hurricane out of a lake, but that is another story !!
