Canadian Lancaster wrecks

Hi
Curiosity is getting me, found his on Wiki, anyone know what state they are in, or have links to photos ?

Substantial wrecks
Lancaster B X FM221 Crashed on take off at Resolute Bay, North West Territories, in 1950. Wreckage remains in situ but has severely deteriorated due to a combination of extreme weather, souvenir hunters and buldozing of the wreckage after the crash.
Lancaster B X KB999 Ditched in a glacial lake near Nunavut in the North West Territories following an engine fire in 1952. Wreck remains in situ but has been broken up by ice action.

cheers
Jerry

Good eye. This one is CF-BTX – which is probably one of the ones you saw in Alberta back in the day. Coulson Logging pulled it off of a hillside up the BC coast when they were heli-logging nearby. It had crashed there back in the ’40s.

Jack–

Neat…Barkley Grow T8P1. Had never seen one until a visit to Alberta in 1995, whereupon I saw three of them!

I used to work at that airport before they de-activated it in the late ’80s. There were many stories of early misadventures that were told by the old timers that I knew. If it did ever happen, my guess is that it occurred post-war when Lancs were operating in the area. I have comprehensive lists of wartime crashes for the area but what happened after remains unknown.

Here’s another animal that was stored there during my time. Guess what it is.

Thats a new one Jack..? Re the other two wrecks, yes KB965 is a memorial to the crew that were killed in the crash. And FM221 is at a military base.

Port Alberni?

I heard a rumour many years ago of a Lanc fuselage that was located at the end of the runway at the old Port Alberni airport – supposedly an emergency landing that resulted in the aircraft overshooting and the remains winding up out on the tidal mud flats. Any truth to that one?

I know the one at Resolute is marked, and is considered a grave site, the other may be the same. Many good folks lost their lives there.

Here’s a link to WIX with photos from the crash site of KB965. Nothing too substancial, but they might be of interest to yourself or someone here.

BTW: There were substancial B-24 remains near Resolute Bay in 1970.
Forum member StepWilk mentioned them a story he did for Flying magazine.
