If it was a -2, then that reduces the field. They were 55144, 305 and 320.

Haven’t been able to pin down which one, but it is definitely a -2. The colour scheme suggests a -2 (the -3s were rather more colourful, as were the -2s from 1956 onwards). And if this is 1955, the -3s were only delivered in the summer of that year, and didn’t go to sea until 1956.

Have another source of photos I’ll check tomorrow, which might help.

It’s an HO4S-2, from HMCS Magnificent, Canada’s aircraft carrier at the time. Magnificent made two visits to England in May and September 1955, and was in European waters for some time either side of both visits.

Thanks Lazy and welcome to the Forum. I note that the RCN had 13 HO4S-2 and -3 and you have given me the clue to the one in London in 1955. I wonder if we can pin it down to which one! If it was a -2, then that reduces the field. They were 55144, 305 and 320.

Magnificent

The S-55 was possibly off a visiting RCN warship? They were certainly in service for a long time; I saw a couple on the carrier Bonaventure and her accompanying destroyer when they were visiting Portsmouth in 1968.
