Great news Easy Tiger.

Well, there are many more of them!

I fully agree that this aircraft is not an original anymore, if it is flying with an engine that never was designed to do it´s duty in that type of aircraft. Of course it would be perfect to hear the original sound if the Tempest will fly in some years. But as long as there is nobody, who is able to restore, maintain and pay a reliable Centaurus engine, it is the best solution to fly it with a wrong engine. This year we will see if Vintage V12 is able to restore a flyable, dependable Centaurus engine, As we saw during the last years, this engine seems not to be the best choice if you are operating with limited ressources. Most of the operators do so….
Pulsar, please see post 12. That is another Centaurus produced in UK by Weald Aviation, who currently have a real Centaurus VI approaching completion for the UKs own Tempest project expected to fly this year.
I think you will find Vintage V12 no longer do Centaurus and when they did, it was in modified form for racing.
Dependable? I believe there have been more engine failures with R2000/R2800s than Centaurus in the states.

It’s worth remembering that the whole Typhoon/Tornado, Tempest and SeaFury family have a history of different power plants. If anything the fitting of a US engine is proof positive of the “Power Egg” concept the type was designed with and it’s “just another engine type” IMHO.
I wonder if anyone will get around to fitting a contra-prop Griffon on a Fury again…

The Sea Fury with the R2800 and Guardian prop sounds great…. I’d be happy to see a Tempest in the air and if we are Graced by one or two in the UK I’ll be well pleased….

Someone will be along in a very short while to stir up the old restoration/replica debate!
By: DazDaMan - 31st May 2019 at 15:33
Two replica Spits have flown with Allisons, but not real ones.
Mind you, one Buchon was re-engined with an Allison, and it seems to work fine!

I can see the attraction of getting the airframe in the air, even if the engine isn’t quite right.
I do wonder what the reaction would be if a Spitfire appeared with a Chevy V12 in it…! 😀
Haven’t Spitfires flown with Allison motors before now? Or am i thinking of replicas?

Dave Reader, help me out here!!!!!!!

JB
Not criticising the use of an American ready to go engine – opinions vary & I keep mine to myself. As a restorer, I totally appreciate cost limitations and what`s being done here is to everyone`s credit.
Centauruses are indeed being overhauled and supported here in UK

From their FB page:
“We do have a Centaurus and we may have it restrored (sic) eventually but our priority is to see this aircraft in the air. Thank you for all your comments!”

I know, I know: it was said fully aware of the reasons for doing it. But a 4360? I’d approve of that!
By: James D - 30th May 2019 at 14:02
Lovely airframe but that engine is an abomination!
You mean they should have used a 4360? 😉

Not if you want to fly it.
Does anyone, anywhere support the Centaurus?
And lacking Paul Allen’s resources (his group funded the overhaul to flight status of German engines) the group is doing the best they can for the airframe and returning an (airworthy) extinct type to flight.

I am shure that they would like to install the original engine. But as everywhere the money and the common sense will be the limiting factor. Letˋs be happy, that a Tempest will fly again in some years!
I’d agree about the engine. If it means the difference between it flying or not, then i’m all for it. They can always change it later on.
Also someone mentioned a possible date of first quarter 2020 for at least taxy tests. I know how that can work, but i wish them luck.

Looking great.
If they should ever want to put a real Centaurus VI on it, PM me
