Canberra 60th Anniversary May 13th 2009

60years ago today on May 13th 1949 Roland Beamont took to the air for the first time with the Canberra prototype VN799 at Warton.

To mark this anniversary the Canberra WT333 Team have applied special 60th anniversary markings to WT333 and will be doing a static engine run at 10.40am today at Bruntingthorpe ,60 years exactly since the first flight,

I believe other events are taking place this month at Newark Air Museum and Aeroventure at Doncaster,

All we need now is WK163 back in the air:)

Well done to Aeroventure for putting on such a great show in the Canberras 60th Anniversary year,

Keeping the Canberra dream alive Matt, nice work!

Great line-up, great looking paint finishes (did they have some help from the RAF on that do you know?)

Three big cheers to Aeroventure for doing such a fine job!

It was nice to see an interesting arrangement of steps and ladders around the B(I)8 mod at Newark today – people might get an interesting view into the top of WV787’s canopy during the coming weeks! 😉

Today’s visitors also seemed to be interested in the temporary displays, which will help raise the profile of the type during this anniversary year.

The PR.7 [in its spurious markings] was also receiving a wash and brush up today from some guys from the 31 Squadron Association who repainted it the other year.

Canberra 60th weekend

I hope Aeroventures Canberra 60th weekend has attracted a few visitors so far, and full marks to them and Newark Air Museum for putting on a display to mark this anniversary of a truely great British jet.

The 60th Anniversary was also celebated at Kemble this weekend as a small working party started to revive Canberra PR9 XH135,power was applied and all systems came to life, further work could see her ground running soon.

I believe Coventrys Canberras could also be due for attention soon,so maybe, just maybe we will have some more active Canberras for the 61st anniversary.;)

Couldn’t agree more – what a wonderful day and the perfect way to celebrate this milestone in aviation in our own little but perfectly formed way.

I for one am so proud to have been a part of todays celebration, and count myself ridiculously lucky to be in a position to be a part of keeping a grand old aircraft alive in tribute to this great design.

I’ll be grinning for weeks..despite that dodgy photo of me caressing a triple breech firing cap! 😮

60th Anniversary, Thanks

A big thanks to all our Canberra friends who came to Bruntingthorpe today to take part in our 60th Anniversary engine run,
It was a great way for the team to mark this event and we enjoyed making lots of jet noise and the tea and Canberra banter afterwards,
As i was a bit busy today i did not take any pictures but many thanks to Damien and Matt for taking and posting some pictures of the day.
It was a great day:D

whats happened to ‘163?

Nothing has happened apart from an engine disintegrating on take off and not being able to find a suitable replacement. We are working on it periodically doing preventative maintenance and if and when we get an engine she will be back in the air. The team are working this coming weekend removing the seats and batteries for servicing and carrying out further work so that when the time comes we will be better placed to get back in the air quickly.
The engine we require is an AVON Mk 109 with ALL the paperwork and a record of correct storage.

Nice set of markings – good luck with the run this morning; fingers crossed that the weather holds! 🙂

Newark just has a temporary display until after Cockpitfest.

A few of Bee’s thoughts about the Canberra can be found in this article http://www.airsceneuk.org.uk/oldstuff/2005/bee/bee.htm
