Canberra B(1)8

Ive just got the new 1:48th Airfix kit and i am looking out for any alternate markings i could finish her in. Im looking for some photos of them wearing any scheme out of the ordinary. Im not worried about which nation owned them, i would just like to model something different.

Ollie,

WV787 was a test-bed airframe with A&AEE at Boscombe Down and Ferranti at Turnhouse.

There are some other scheme ideas here http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=88409&highlight=WV787 although some pictures have been deleted. 🙁

Cut the nose of the Kit for the Canberra, and then scratch build a Tornado nose onto the Bucc (it is essentially a cone with a pitot head and static condutor strips – http://www.blackburn-buccaneer.co.uk/Pages1_files/Radar_Index.html ) and you have two specially nosed models?

Good idea that. I might be able to source a Tornado nose for this one.

Yes, chop it off the Airfix kit and graft it on to your B(I).8, might need to find a kit that you are willing to execute though!

Problem is im collecting the 1:48 kit for another project so i dont want to hack them up.

😉 WV787 ‘all over black’ – just about make out a back view here!

Now that is very tempting. Whats the history of these markings? Im sure i could make a Buccaneer nose for her.

Ive also got the PR9 kit in the stash to build sometime to. I will try and get the book back and have a look but most of them seem to have been modified.

My favourite B(I).8 scheme was that worn by the B(I).12s of the South African Air Force, they were a lovely all over mid blue scheme, made the Canberra look clean and elegent IMO.
A South American country also wore a similar scheme, thinking FAP Peruvian AF?

There are some lovely Venezualan ‘8 schemes, including at least one in a ‘Vietnam era’ B-57 scheme, light grey under, two green shades, and brown above.

For gaudy I don’t think you can beat the Indian Air Force versions that were used in the TT role, they have bright orange upper, and the traditional yellow and black diagonal stripes undersides.

For all the different Royal Aircraft Establishment and trials schemes, check out Adrian Balches book on RAE, supurb colour pics in there.

Fave RAF scheme were the early 16 sqn aircraft with the gloss black undersides, camo top and sqn colour wrap around rear fusalage, along with the keys emblem on the tail.

It really is worth researching this subject thoroughly, some air forces used many different schemes for the B(I).8 (aka .12, .82 etc).
Good luck with the kit, hoping it’s better than the PR.9 version!

John

Are there any photos out there of Canberras from these nations?

The RNZAF operated B(I)12s which are essentially an 8 minus the gun pod, I think.

There has been a very lively discussion on Kiwi Canberra colours – with lots of photos – at the Wings Over NZ forum. See: http://rnzaf.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=Modelling&action=display&thread=9511

Hope that helps 🙂

Oh, and if you’re really keen for a different one, why not India? Most of the surviving RNZAF fleet went there.

Are there any photos out there of them? There is one included in the kit in a all over natural metal scheme.
