Canberra, Coloumn and Photos,

Hi all,

Asking Favours again (I’m Sorry)

think i have been offered most of the parts i will initailly need for the rebuild of cockpit WH887 “847” Canberra (FRADU)

only thing i hvent found is a control coloumn, so if anyone knows of one lying in the shed, please let me know,

also i a very keen to find any photos of her in service, especailly her “early years” ,theres a few of her at fradu, but none of her when she westonzoyland
with the RAF 542 Sqn and 21 Sqn ,also served with Upwood Stn Flight, and i believe transfered to the RN in 1969 FRU (Hurn) ,then FRADU at Yoevilton, and ended her days at Llanbedr,

its the early RN colours or RAF Colours/Photos etc i am keen to find,
in 55 i believe she would have been Silver all over, as for the “Middle years”
Ive not a clue,

PLEASE NOTE !!
I would like to get her back to her 1969 Colours just after she was converted to a TT18 , with the RN, would the colours have been diferent than she was when in service in 1980s with Yoevilton ??
mmmmm puzzling,
I will be keeping her a TT18, after i realised they are a bit rarer than the B.2 on the cockpit scene, but would like her in her Earliest colours possible,
ie-1969 70 ,
Can Any one Advise ???
😀

A forum search on TT.18 will give pictures of the pilot main panel and the following diagram from the Pilots Notes.

Regards
Ross

thanks Ross, thats a great help:D

any one know where i can get a copy of the Pilots Notes ???
and a AP,
wonder if i should try FAA Museum , as they served there in the 1980s,
she may well be staying FRADU at mo, only due to the fact i believe she still has alot of instruments in the back for the TT18,
but we will have to wait and see until I have got her back home and gone through her with a fine tooth comb 😀
I suggest a “CANBERRA SPECAIL” next year at Cockpit fest as it will be the Canberras 60th aniversary !!!, anyone else agree, ????

I have re-read my posts and in no way was I being sarcastic or critising you, I thought up untill now I was just trying to put general info your way, sorry if it looks like anything else. Re stencils and stickers I was merely pointing out that stencils were used, and ‘straight forward’ alluded to the silver paint scheme, your first post here asks for advice and comments.
I have been generally supportive in PM and posts, and am really glad you have preservation projects going.
I will ‘butt out’

Sorry Pagen, Its so easy to take things the wrong way when just reading a few lines,
truth is i did not know how these machines were painted, but i suppose I cab mask off all the areas where the signs are ie ejection seat etc and go ahead and paint it, then sprucing up the stencilling after she has her main paint job,
I guess i will have to try a find a AP for her, also as most of the cockpit panels are missing in the front I will have to find a in depth layout of the instrument panels and ancillerys., i will have to wait until i get her to zoyland to see exatly whats missing , someones been through her like a dose of salts
although suprisingly alot of Nav stuff has been left and a bang seat but as for the front i think i have a set of rudder pedals and odd parts, thats it, i will have to source the rest some how
once again sorry pagen for thinking you were be-littling myself on the forum,
i look forward to your future helpful comments 😀

OK Pagen, I dont claim to be aexpert on Canberras, or any aircraft for that reason,
I simply DONT KNOW , I will have lots of help and advice where the aircraft will be situated,

I know nothing of “Stickers”/Trnsfers”/Stencils etc etc, or where to get them, this includes AP’s ,My expertease lies in research of crashed military aircraft ,

which is a lot different to aviation preservation, but please give me a chance, we all had to start somewhere, i have helped in the restoration of a pietenpol air camper, and mostly of a Bucker(CASA) Jungmann, a totally diferent kettle of fish, as we had to start from scratch , and the paint scheme was from a book,
I need help not sarcastic critisism, I simply do not know, the last thing i want to do is to put a stencil, etc in the wrong place and take it to cockpit fest for people to laugh at my mistakes, i want to get it right first time,I also feel there is a need to hurry as its the canberras 60th

There’s no doubt in my mind , although she’s straight winged and nearly old enough for her bus pass the design still doesn’t seem to look out of date.

Where?

Re silver scheme, it really was straight forward and all the stencilling (not stickers!) etc would be in designated areas as layed out in the AP.

, suprisingly she still had one of her bang seats in, the Nav position i believe , but no FLIGHT panel at all, is in quite a mess really ,gonna need some work , and much bigger than i expected,
there was quite a bit of stuff in the collection of aircraft stuff there, from VC10 cockpits to a puma, and a gutted PR9 nose

also need the navigators hatch panel, i imagine the list is endless,
will get her to Zoyland soon, and dont worry Nige will sort you out soon (you know who you are 😉 )

No doubt about is there? OW’s display line gives you the chance of some good shots. I know I keep saying it but I really must get back there soon, I can’t remember how long it is since I last went there. I guess about 93/4 or so.

50s silver

Hi, again,

well if i could get the stickers ,templates, photos of her nose in the 50s i would do her silver, and convert back to B.2, with all 50s instruments etc,
but would be a long haul on that one, especailly the stickers/templates,
but whilst sanding her down ,you never know she may show her old badges, and colours,
and as for Alberts comment ,well i would not know, I know one thing for certain, she isnt going raf cammo !:D

A quick peek on Demobbed reveals that 15 B.2s and 16 tt.18s (both mostly nose sections) are preserved in the UK. When you consider how many more B.2s were built than TT.18 conversions were made thats quite incredible. There seem to be very few B.2s preserved in classic ’50s Canberra schemes where as most TT.18s still seem to be in original target towing colours.
I do understand your reasons however, especially with the interior fit.
Just can’t beat a all silver Canberra for clean look IMO s;)

its the early RN colours

What ‘early RN colours’? As far as I know as soon as she was converted to a TT.18 and joined FRADU, the colours never changed. My earliest photo of her was taken at Yeovilton in 1973 in the standard grey with black/yellow TT stripes underneath.
