The future of Canberra WE191 at Dumfries is being discussed by the museum board who have so far agreed that the fuselage should be reduced to a cockpit section. I posted on here some months back to see what interest there would be in the fuselage in the hope that someone could use it to restore another aircraft, but no concrete offers were received.
We intend to finalise plans for this aircraft in the next two or three weeks and action thereafter will be swift, so here is a final chance to save the fuselage.

The museum is now open to offers / swaps regarding the whole of the aircraft as it lies now INCLUDING the cockpit. We have a reasonable idea of the value of the cockpit and the weight of the fuselage so we can’t let it go for pennies, but please pm me with your ideas/offers/suggestions.
Eventually, the dreaded e-bay may be involved in this but we’d rather get the word out to other preservationists first, so please do tell your friends!

Sorry if my post offended – it was supposed to be light hearted, in spite of what must have been a difficult decision to make and with several of the Dumfries crowd evident at the auction at Millom I did wonder if the price achieved, for what everyone had declared a total wreck, had helped them make up their minds?
However, on a more serious note I understand the under-bidder was a scrap dealer? Which surely indicates that today’s scrap prices are likely to have serious effect on the aircraft preservation movement. With airframes having a potentially greater value by weight alone than perhaps some collections can afford to pay?
Another point – and I hope still relevant – is the absence of “new” material coming onto the preservation scene, as “reduce to produce” seems to be the order of the day – perhaps to remove the evidence of the utter waste of taxpayers money as more and more aircraft seem to be falling victim to politically motivated cuts? There does still seem to be an air of complacency around Canberras, Vampires and the likes, which it seemed were once available to any small group of enthusiasts wanting to try to “preserve” one. Many of these have fallen by the wayside by now and with little or new material likely to be available, those that are left certainly need to be looked after – So I really do genuinely hope this one finds a good home.

Millom was an informative day out regards values, but our Canberra is a very different fish. Unlike Millom’s it doesn’t have wings, but also unlike Millom’s it has perfect spar attachment points. Ultimately, the market will decide it’s value, or we will get a new exhibit in it’s place – interesting either way!

Best of luck in the quest to find her a new home Johnny, us Canberraphiles would love to think of one being saved, the UK Canberra population hs been decreasing at an alarming rate recently!
