Hi Forum,
Just been Mooching around in the garage, and found a piece of airframe skinning, that i took from the scrap Canberra Cockpit that was crushed at flowers Yard Chippenham, about 10 years ago,
its silver with the yellow wording , (half is missing)
Up Arrow
NAVIGATORS
BREAK THROUGH
EMERGENCY RES
as you can see half the lettering is missing ,
I am “led” to believe the flowers yard Canberra was one of 3 converted at the ready for the London -New Zealand record breaking air race, hence why i saved this piece,
my question is 1 “Was she one of 3 converted FOR the said record breaking attemp,
and 2 , I have searched through the forum to find her serial Number, but cannot find it, does anyone know her Number and her history ,or even any photos of her ???
I want to put the information in a box frame with the piece of airframe and a photo of her to put on my wall, would be really really apprecaitive if anyone can help.
Kind regards
Chris C

.As an aside Flowers Yard also had some Bristol Hercules exhaust collector rings, which i believe went to Canada in 1995/96 and now reside on Halifax NA337.
Yep Geoff,
I was the one dealing with Mr Karl Kjasgaard, who was with the team restoring NA337 . I emailed him, and he came over and visited me, and we went to flowers yard to see what could be used for the NA337 Project, I believe the Cowls /Collector rings came from Hastings Type, and I do remember he did grab a few bits, we saw quite alot of him Back then.
The poor old canberra nose was smashed to ******y though, but I remember the London -Christchurch on her.. which at the time, I never realised the importance of it .

Canberra WE142
Hi,
Just found your web site and found it very informative.I am disposing of part of my aviation artefact collection and one of the items is the nose skinning from WE142 with the ‘London-Christchurch’ inscription on it.I hope this will be of interest to someone. It is on e bay at the moment.I am hoping to dig out a photo of WE142 at Heathrow prior to the start of the race.

WE142
Air Britain serials files WA-WZ
we142 it states ” we142 540Sqn/231ocu , sold as scrap 1970, to flowers scrapyard chippenham”
also i was a regular at flowers, and when the day of the final sale came ,i took this piece from her , i don’t believe she was sold , and was broken up, it was the cockpit /Nose only, and it was busted open ,crushed ,
i saved this piece for prosperity

Wasn’t WD965 (c/n EEP 71047) mentioned recently as also being a Flowers’ yard inmate ?

For the London-Christchurch Air Race the UK Canberra entry comprised two PR.3s and one PR.7. Two of the airframes are still whole and extant – WE139 at Hendon (PR.3) and WH773 (PR.7) now at Gatwick Air Museum. WE142 was broken up at 15 MU (Wroughton) in July 1970 and sold for scrap on 7 Sept 1970.
Intrigued as to how you know your ‘bit’ from the scrapyard was from WE142 as the cockpit section was thought to have been ‘gifted’ by 15 MU to some ATC sqn up north somewhere. I can’t verify that though. Maybe Dave Burke will know?
Nose had the legend London – Christchurch 24hrs 34mins painted just below the front of the cockpit. I think Albert Ross (of this forum) has a pic of 142 lying on the dump at RAF Wroughton.

Har Har 😀
Not a bad Idea, you know i am starting to fall for the old Bird, even found some canberra crashsites that may Possibly be worth taking a look at , (with a MOD licence of course )
Not worth next to nothing, like spitfire dig bits, etc, But i dont do it for that.
But really interesting Postwar History, They have ” all got a Story to tell”
the way i am going we will be the Post war recovery group, just located a Chippie,(its a Local one,LOL:D ) and another Meatbox T.7 , that might be worth looking at ,That served with 12FTS at Westonzoyland 😀
Sounds very good, we will have to have a chat about all this looks like the museum idea is bracnching out, just need people to help us
Talk soon
