Canberra PR9 XH174 Saved for Restoration

After some patient waiting, we are pleased to let you all know that we collected the Cockpit Section of Canberra PR9 XH174 today. She is now drying out in a nice warm, insulated, industrial unit, in Staffordshire.

We have certainly got a good project on our hands and we would like to get it externally restored in time for Remembrance Day this year. Internally, we would like to try and source as many original panels as possible, rather than just rushing at it.

The good news is that we have a brand new main canopy, still in its wax. The bad news is that we are missing the following, in to achieve an external restoration:

• The main nose cone for Navigators Position,
• Front three Perspex’s for Pilots Position,
• Main canopy mechanism,
• Two circular Perspex’s for Camera Ports (behind Navigators Seat),
• Equipment/Avionics Bay removable Hatch,
• One undercarriage door,
• Various ducts.
• 3 foot of fuselage for the main camera/ flare bay, I can wish!

We would be grateful if anybody has any leads as to where we could source the above, and could let me know by pm. Especially the Nose Cone !

Also if there are any sheet metal workers out there, in the Midlands area, with time on their hands, then please do not hesitate to contact us.

Many thanks,

James

Kemble Canberra’s

XH131 (the tatty looking one) has remnants of the grey temporary alkaline finish applied for Ops over Afghanistan still showing over the original hemp. It was never washed off prior to delivery to Kemble, and has therefore slowly worn off since 2006 due to rain, the blanks brushing against it and a little bit of work here and there for last years air day. It is not in any particularly bad condition, it just gives the appearance. It is due to depart Kemble to a new home this year.

XH135 is being prepared for static display at this years air day by a a small team, and was today moved from it’s long-time location over near the Chevron hangar, to a dispersal on the other side of the airfield.

XH134 is under the technical supervision of Delta Jets (though not owned) and is maintained in a servicebale condition. I cannot speak for the owners precise plans for the aircraft though it is well cared for and under cover.

Hope that helps!

Found this one lurking landside at Kemble last weekend…it’s either being stripped down or beginning to look a bit sorry for itself…

What’s happening/happened with the Kemble Canberras?

This cockpit section had already been sold, questions will be asked!!!!

Hi and thank you for your post.

Your wording could be interpreted by some as suggesting dodgy or underhand dealings and this is certainly not the case.

I chased up numerous leads on several cockpits, all with speculation on what was going to happen to them in the future. I avoided the speculation and contacted the people and the companies that owned them directly. I asked once about XH174 and was informed that it was still available, I made an offer, they accepted it and that is that, nothing underhand at all. I still have the emails too!

Your wording COULD also be interpreted as questioning my integrity, that is why I am setting the record straight now and out of the way.

In short, I made an enquiry with the company who owned it and they said it was still for sale, I made an offer and that was it. No dodgy dealings, not a very exciting story, just a very simple deal. So if there are any queries or questions, then please address them to the company who I brought it from, I cannot speak for them or contribute to speculation, it was still for sale and i purchased it.

I don’t know about you, but I’m on here to enjoy myself and not fall out with people! I have found this forum to be a great resource and the responses to be very positive, long may it continue.

Many thanks to you all,

James

Hi Dave T,

I owe you a massive thank you! Without the link you sent me in January, in response to my very first post on this forum, I wouldn’t have started down the PR9 route, so technically its all your fault !!!!!!!

James,

tee hee… no worries. Always happy to point people towards available cockpits ~if~ they are geniune.

And as you say, Ross is ‘da man to talk to. And i presume he’s told you about a possible source for the nose also ?

Meanwhile i’ll keep an ear to the ground for your parts request/s, but meanwhile you might want to chase the hulk of B.I.8 WT339 at Barkston Heath for bits.

Cheers…..

good call but….60 years of Canberra!

Well spotted, maths was never my strong point, but the sentiment was there!

It would be great if we could sort something out, from our point of view it would be nice to put her on show, having been kept locked up for many years and it is fifty years of Canberra !

You only need to ask NAM, and I’m sure that plenty of us will keep an eye on her.

She is big, even sitting on the trolley in the unit, she’s as tall as our 18 tonner !

I wasn’t being evasive over the source of the canopy; I just didn’t want to get into trouble over advertising or anything like that!

Many Thanks,

James

I am gutted about Cockpitfest, as I would genuinely like to go and take the cockpit (even in its present condition), but we work in the event industry and the dates clash that weekend. It would also be a great opportunity to put some faces to names too.

I could easily drop the cockpit off there and collect it after, but I don’t know how the organisers would feel about it being just left there unattended?

There’s still time yet though!
