Time to start shaking your piggy bank Bex. Its your second chance to grab your very own Cranberry PR9.
A magazine which I will not name has just landed on my desk and in the Classified section there is the following advert
“Midair S.A. As owner, offers for sale 2 ex RAF Canberra PR9 aircraft Rolls Royce Avon Mk206-with or without Camera Systems. Servicable, flyable, hot storage program out of service 07/2006”.

The original sale blurb said that CAA had permitted one limited positioning flight. Since they were delivered by the RAF to Kemble then this positioning flight may still be possible.
As to long term use, IIRC then a reskinning of top wing surfaces was looming for the new owner and they were nearly maxed out of cabin pressure cycles as well as landing cycles.
Regards
Ross

What are the chances of the CAA allowing a ferry flight if a new owner wished to move the aircraft to a museum or alternative location for storage or maintenance etc ?

Would be nice to see at least one of the jets in a museum preserved as they were at the end of their service life. I believe the one at Tossford is silver now, the one outside at Wyton is in Camo and 68 will be grey but away from view at Marham. Lets hope that they dont go the same way as the B(I)8s. there ARE many B2/6s etc but apart from a few cockpits(very nice by the way) not too many PR9s……….perhaps I’m a bit biased

Only IF they were being operated under military contract, which, given the fact that they are for sale, seems unlikely.
I see a limited market for airworthy Canberras on the display circuit, especially given the ferocious cost of operating them!
Do any museums actually need a Canberra any more?
It would be nice to see one of them preserved as operational; even if it doesnt fly – just not sure that Kemble is the right place for them to be!

Last time i seen them at Kemble, they was both still in military marks
as was worn in RAF service 2006. so i would say there is no need for change and if so what markings would they need to be in.?
I think what is being said is that they would revert back to been operated with a military serial rather than a UK Civil registration.

Is it not more likely that, if they passed into civilian use and won a contract for RAF work, they would appear back in military marks in a similar fashion to the two HHA Hunters ZZ191/192?

Not as far as I remember. I think one of the two has a high number of pressurisation cycles on the airframe, which may restrict its ability to operate at alititude, but I don’t believe there were issues with the other airframe.
Of course any potential purchaser will get about a ton of manuals and logs which will give the full story!
All well and true ,
but under CAA and in Civvie hands would they not be restricted from high
altitude flying
Meaning the pressurisation cycles on the airframe would not be a problem .?

anyone got a rough price? Just out of curiosity, you understand…

Am I right in thinking they are basically life expired?
That being the case, the chances of the RAF hiring them back are slim!

I want one
Theres never a winning lottery ticket around when you need one 😡 At the moment, the piggy bank dont even rattle. However, my birthday is coming up so anyone fancy giving me a cracking birthday pressie, hint hint grovel grovel LoL.
Seriously though, whats the betting the sale price is a darn sight more than the present owners paid for em. And from this, the rumour that the MOD was gonna lease em back must have fallen through too.
