Was the name Canberra a marketing ploy to sell the type to Australia ?
Yes.
. . . and
…So I wonder if there was a conscious consideration of the Aussie market?
Yes.

Not that I’m aware of. Policy at the time was to name bombers after UK and Commonwealth towns, and I’m not sure there was any particular desire to sell the Halifax to Canada or the Wellington to New Zealand…
(this is where everyone tells me that actually the Halifax was named after Lord Halifax and Wellington was named after the boot/small village in Lincolnshire…)
[Edit]
According to http://www.bywat.co.uk/canframes.html, the Canberra tribute site: ‘Production began with WD929 which was named “Canberra” by Australian PM, the Hon R G Menzies on January 19, 1951 at Biggin Hill.’

It’s OK, it’ll be a nice early 30th present for me. Happy birthday to me, happy birthday to me….
(If anyone feels like getting me the TT.18, I don’t already have one 😉 )

The owners do scrap aircraft and indeed try to preserve some so maybe the onus is on them to try and make a happy ending out of this one!

What an absolute shame. I can’t help but think people scramble around trying to buy a corroded wreck that was a certain v-bomber but when there’s a decent airframe like this available a lot cheaper, nothing happens.IMHO, of course. Tin hat on.

That’s a shame. £5K doesn’t seem too much to ask, but then if like me you don’t have £5K that you can spend on a Cranberry, it might as well be £500k.
Will be picking up my panel from the sorting office on Saturday Dave. Looking forward… And Bruce, am still in the market for instruments.
Bloodnok, do you think your scrappy has any Canberra instruments amongst that stuff you mentioned was lying around?
By: JetBlast - 19th October 2006 at 17:45
The aircraft failed to attract a single bid on ebay, I fear the scrapman will now cometh with the nose section being sold on.

I have a nose perspex – rather cloudy, but a good pattern, and also some glass. If anyone needs it then pm me. Wont be expensive.

The yard does not contain anything T.11. He has various bits of aircraft that act as attractions to the business but he won’t part with them!
There were two Canberra nose glasses in the yard last summer – he knows the price of everything so don’t expect them for nothing!

Bloodnok… i think you ought to mount a rescue mission or similar ?
By: Phantom Phixer - 10th October 2006 at 14:12
Hi Bloodnok you would there be anything Vampire T11 in the yard?
By: bloodnok - 10th October 2006 at 13:20
Nigel (aka ‘Buccsociety’) would be pleased to here that.
He knows someone who’ll take a mould & run off a fresh batch, but they just need an original to go by.
Any idea if that ones available Bloodnok ?
.
yes it should be available, its in gillings now somewhat smaller yard in diss in norfolk.
i’ve mentioned it on here before, but i guess it didn’t get picked up on.
they’ve had quite a change around there now due to building work on adjacent land, and i think some of the various canopies that were thare are gone now (lightning, F-4, JP), but i saw the canberra nose glass (complete with flat window) there in the summer.
if its important, i can probably go and check there this weekend.
there’s a fair bit of other aircraft parts there as well, mostly odd instruments/boxes, odd bits of harness (buckles, leg/armrestraint buckles) quite a few test sets, fasteners, and tooling.
quite a bit is modernish stuff, but theres odds and sods from older aircraft types that were retired in the 80’s.

If anyone is after a new nose, I can put them onto a man who has a brand new crated one for a Canberra that is
