Canberra WT510

i have been given three photographs that show damage to the undercarriage and the stb wing of an RAF aircraft.

The rear is stamped RAF Laarbruch 5th February 1964, along with a note
crash damage to WT510, Jan 17th 1964.

I was wondering if anybody might know anything more about the crash. I am assuming it was a light crash as the damage doesn’t seem to be major (crumpled wing tip and damaged wheel).

I was working at Laarbruch on 31 Sqdn at the time as an electrician.
I do remember an incident where the pilot claimed the rudder trim was not working during an asymmetric engine situation.
Testing the trim immediately after the landing, with the pilot and Sqdn CO in attendance proved it to be fully functional.
It may be that your photo does not relate to this particular incident.
The photo would help to jog the gray matter a bit!

Laarbruch F540 for Jan 64 states:
On the night of 16th Canberra WT510 flown by Fg Off Turner crashed on landiing at base after engine trouble during the flight. No injuries were sustained, though the aircraft is considered to be Category 4.

As a member of Royal Air Force Laarbruch Museum I would be very interested in the photos you wrote about.

Hello Johnnie,

it couldn’t have been that bad, as 510 was transferred to the Navy in 1971 to become a T.22. UK Serials lists the complete data on it as follows:

d/d 12/01/1955, transferred to Royal Navy 15/02/1971, sold as scrap at St. Athan 12/1992, remains scrapped by Hanningfield Metals, Stock, Essex during 07/1993

If I find anything more on the crash I’ll let you know.
