Looking to buy a new DSLR, but would like to know what you guys would recommend out of the 400D or the 30D. I see that the 400D have a massive 12 or so Megapixels and the 30D having only just 8 Megapixels. Thanks in advance.

Watch out for the batteries.
I started with a 300D – and got fed up having to keep changing lenses (static, then flying) – so I bought another DSLR – this time a 350D (body only).
What I hadn’t appreciated is that the 350 has a completely different sized battery to the 300.
So now, when I go on my annual pilgrimage to Russia, I take two cameras (300D & 350D), three lenses, six batteries ( 2 x 3 for each camera) PLUS two lots of battery chargers!!!!
I may indulge myself and swap the 300D for a 400D – at least it has the same batteries as the 350D and I can ditch one lot of batteries/chargers.
Of course, if you only have one camera, it isn’t a problem.

Thanks for the replies guys, I may just hold off like G-PIK said and possibly get a better deal on the 30D or possibly hold off longer for the 40D. 🙂

yeah true I’m not saying the 350D is a bad camera but when I pick up my 30D there is no comparison, the 350D feels like a toy.
Best advice is to goto the shop and try them out.
The lens also helps 😉

I’d say 30D aswell, it just is better! Feels like a camera 😉
You should tell him though that you use a 350D with beautiful results 🙂

Jamie, if money isn’t much of a wory, in my opinion there is no comparison!
The 30D should be better for aviation, it can soot 5 frames per second where as the 400 can only manage 3. If you ever get to try these, you will soon see what a difference a faster cmeara makes. It’s better built, bigger and as previously said, feels like a proper camera. The 40D is rumoured to hit the streets soon, so hold off and you might get a great bargain on a 30D 😉

I say “30D” but then again I would, wouldn’t I? 😀

The 30D is heavier and more robust than the 400D (which is rated at 10.1megapixels here). As a recently-made-redundant press photographer I’d opt for the 30D in general use but the 20 per cent greater file size of the 400D would be a temptation. How big do you want your prints?
