Got this yesterday on an important shoot, but coaxed it back to life by removing the battery and then replacing it after 5 mins.
Anyone else had personal experience of this ? I have a Wedding to shoot in a week, and need to make plans if this is an issue likely to re-occur

That’s very helpful-Thank you.
Like a dummy, I just saw Err and swapped bodies, as it was the middle of a chistening. Never took any notice of the code. The card was pretty near full.
I sure will look if there is a next time.

Indeed, the Err error should have a code attached.
Have you tried with different lenses attached on the camera body?
If the error still comes up last thing you could do is clean the little metal pins in the body mouth which connect with the lens. They easily collect dirt and may cause a connection malfunction.

Do you know what specific error you had? Normally the camera should say Err with two numbers. For instance Err-01, Err-20, Err-99.
Edited to add below list of errors on the 30D. Your camera is more professional and likely to have more error codes. But in general I would assume the codes to remain the same:
Err-01: No communication between lense and camera. Clean contacts between lense and camera.
Err-02: Problem with CF memory card. Replace card with another card, or format card.
Err-04: Memory card is full.
Err-05: Build in flash is blocked and can’t be opened.
Err-99: General error that can be used whenever the camera does not know what’s going on.
Browsing the internet I also found the following errors that are on the 5D, but not on my 30D:
Err-06: Self cleaning sensor unit error.
Err-20: Problems with the shutter. Send back to Canon for replacing. (ouch!)
Err-70: Cmos (sensor) error.
