Canon EOS 30D

I’ve decided it’s time to upgrade to a serious digital SLR. My current 3.1 megapixel camera gives me decent shots, but I want to move into the serious photography realm. Naturally, I first looked at the top-of-the-line stuff, and my wallet promptly ran for cover. $3500 or more? DAMN! That’s, like, custom guitar money! Anyway, I’ve done some reading and some browsing, and I think the EOS 30D might be the way to go. Does anyone have experience with this camera? I’d like ot hear from anyone who has hands-on experience. My primary questions are if it can shoot well in low-light or at night (like, can I take a shot of the moon), and does it do well with fast moving targets (airplanes, duh). And what’s a good zoom lens to get. Any help is appreciated, and if you have an alternative camera that you’re a big fan of, I’d like to hear about that as well.

Just jumping back on this one…..EOS350D local dealer, 2nd user, £300 NO LENS …..or 10D Local Guy, 2nd User with a Sandisk 512 what ever that is, NO LENS, SAME PRICE…..what would you buy????????????

Cheers ( again)

TBH I probably would pay an extra £50 and get a 350D brand new in a box with a warranty.

A sandisk 512 is a memory card , worth maybe a tenner.

Don’t know the prices in the UK, but I guess that a 350 new can be obtained for a small amount more (they are here around 350 p. st.). So my obtion should be to look for a discounted new 350. Apart from this, what is the price of a 400D? Might be worth to include this in the choice.I should’nt go for the 10D.

Thanks the guy also has a CANON EOS 300D same sort of price, with standard lens ?

Jamie if you really want a Canon and if finances allow go for the 350D, with it having been superseded by the 400D their should be some reasonable deals about. (The term reasonable is a bit elastic)

Like the 20D it is an 8MP camera, although the build quality is not as good, to be honest before you buy anything try to have a look at an example of your proposed purchase, see if the size and layout of the camera suits you.

See my earlier comments.

Hope the above helps.

Hi

Can someone tell me what the difference is between the 30D and the D30?? or are they the same….been offered a Canon D30 Digital SLR Camera & 28-105mm Zoom lens for £200 ish !

Canon EOS D30 3MP Digital SLR Camera of about 6 or 7 years ago, leave well alone.

Canon Eos 30D 8.3MP Semi/Pro Digital SLR Camera, may be replaced by a 10MP camera in the early part of next year.

Hope the above helps.

Cheers

I would go for the 30D and the Canon IS 100-400 lens. It costs more than the IS 70-300 lens but on the other hand you may want to upgrade to the 100-400 lens at some time anyway. Look at it this way, go for the IS 100-400 now if you can and avoid having to spend an ‘extra’ amount on the IS 70-300 lens first. I have had my IS 100-400 lens for three years now and it is working perfectly.

What type of images do you want to take? With action photography a lot of photographers take their pictures in high quality fine JPEG mode but for low light photography you may want to take pictures in what is known as RAW mode. You may then find you would want to take pictures of aircraft in RAW mode as well.

With the 30D you can take at least 11 pictures in one burst in RAW mode. That is just enough fo my picture taking at airshows. Sometimes you could get 12 in one burst if you use an extreme compact flash which downloads the images quickly for you to start shooting again. You should get all of the action. Of course if you want to take JPEG images on the 30D you can shoot more than 20 images in one burst. JPEG picture taking on the 350D and 400D would be no problem either.

The 400D can take 10 images in RAW mode but only at a rate of 3 images per second. Canon did not offer a higher shooting rate in case it started competing with their own 30D. In terms of area, the 10 million mega pixels on the 400D is not a huge improvement on 8 million megapixels on the 30D when compared to the improvement from 6 millon on the 10D to 8 millon on the 20D/30D.

Canon have a habit of replacing their cameras in March or August in roughly 18 – 20 month intervals. The rumours of the 40D replacement is a Camera of 10m megapixels but this will bring the new Camera closer to 5D area so I think the 5D will be replaced first to maintain the gap with the 30D hanging on until August/Sept next year. Of course this is speculation but with the airshow season almost over in the UK what I would consider doing is waiting until March/April 2007 and see what happens. If it is replaced then the price of in stock 30Ds would come down

Lastly, I do not want to put you off but my 20D died the day before the Abingdon Air Fayer this year. As it would not have been repaired in time the prospect of not taking pics at airshows for a few weeks horrified me much more than the cost of a new camera. I went out and purchased the 30D which I had originally intended to give a miss. My 30D died later at the Bigging Hill air show but was replaced immediately with a new 30D under retail guaranty.

On looking back my first 30D was a duff Camera anyway. My current one works perfectly and I have not even had a single error message. I am extremely happy with it.

I have no idea how much you know about photography but as you are serious about it then at the moment I think the 30D will give you the flexibility you may want at a decent price.

Good luck.

I
I have heard no rumours regarding a forthcoming 40D, however the release of the 10 mega pixel 400D does make me wonder why the 30D was put on the market!

Cheers

Eric

Between the Photokina (next week) and the PMA (February 2007) a (let’s call it a) 40D will be released. So with the season almost over, it might be a good idea to wait a few months, that is, if you have time to wait.

I agree with the previous comments, however the bottom line is really going to depend on what you wish to spend. On the assumption that you have not won the lottery I would recommend the following:-

The 30D body complete with Canon’s 17 – 85mm image stabilized Zoom – Camera World in London are currently charging — £1078-00

A good second lens would be Canon’s 70 – 300mm image stabilized Zoom; it is an affordable lens that will fulfil many of your aviation needs, but not all. The cost from Camera World will be £365-00.

If money is no object then buy a Canon 100 – 400mm L series Lens, it again is image stabilized. The Down side is the cost, it will set you back £1079-00 from Camera World.

The pictures I have posted were all taken using the 70 – 300mm zoom.

I have heard no rumours regarding a forthcoming 40D, however the release of the 10 mega pixel 400D does make me wonder why the 30D was put on the market!

Cheers

I have both the 350D and 30D, both are great camera’s but they are two different beasts! 350D feels like a plastic toy compared the the 30D, check some of my shots on the links below. Some with the 30D with 100-400 L and some with the 350D with 70-300 IS.
I hear rumours of a 40D soon!

I’ve just come back from a (non aviation) holiday – well except for a few outdoor museums, with my new 30D.

I took about 1500 shots and although I’ve not reviewed them all, I’ve been very pleased with the results so far. I’m using a 24-105L lens as my “standard” lens with the 100-400L now on my 20D body, and I’m also happy with both lenses.

Hope this helps.

Sean,

Regarding camera type, I would advise buying the most up to date, if you wish to buy a canon, you currently have three in the right price bracket these being 350D, the new 400D and the 30D:-

1> 350D – currently the cheapest of the three, it has much of the same technology found in the 20D and its replacement the 30D, both are 8.3Megapixel cameras. On a regular basis I enlarge images to A3 size which have been taken with my 20D. On the down side the camera has just been replaced by the 400D, it is also a bit on the small side for my big hands.

2> 400D – Just out, this is a 10megapixel camera at a great price, having seen it I again think it is a bit small, it also seems to have a good set of features.

3> 30D – replaced the 20D earlier this year similar to its earlier cousin, it uses the same sensor etc however it does have various small but useful improvements over the 20D.

Whatever you buy you can be certain that they will bring out something better; such is the modern world of cameras.

Eric
PS: I have attached another couple of pictures taken with the 20D

I am using a 10D at the moment and am very pleased with it.
I have had it about 2 years and it hasnt let me down yet!
You could still get one brand new for a bargain price, which means more money to spend on L series lens.

I must admit to regarding the 30D as the 20D Mk2, in other words slightly improved performance. Regarding use at night, that is going to come down to the skill of the photographer.

As to lens sizes, for the sort of subjects you are talking about an image stabilized 75 to 300 mm zoom would be a good starting point, but at the end of the day it will come down to where you take photographs and how much money you have.

My experience with the 20D makes me feel that you will not go far wrong with the 30D>

I took both of the attached with a 20D
