I just can’t ever get started on flightsim. I installed squawkbox. I managed to create a flightplan, but what is next? How do I get flying? Do i need FSNav or an FMC in my panel? It’s all so complicated!!

I dont know about the FMC or FSNAV, but my controller told me I had to fly by the VOR’s in my flight plan. How do I fly by VOR’s?

An FMC or something like FSNav makes life a lot easier. SIDs and STARs are a pretty basic requirement too, or else you will get seriously delayed, or even refused departure if you are trying to fly from a busy airport like Heathrow.
VOR Frequencies can be found in the map view, or better still note them down from the flightplan. However an FMC equipped aircraft and/or FSNav is really useful, FSNav was my best friend for years, and even now when using advanced FMS equipped aircraft, I still refer to FSNav a lot. A worthy investment, PM me if u want more details 😉

If there’s no controller, you need to declare ALL intentions to any other pilots in the area. And you need to work out who should taxi and take off first with any traffic on the ground.

I tried Vatsim last night and I must say its excellent. The people on there are the nicest people you could meet. All i did was download Squakbox 3 and then followed the readme from sb3. It is extremely easy. I think i will try a flight tonight.
Just one question, what happens if you go to an airport where there is no tower. For example flying LGW-NCL what happens if there is no controller at NCL?
Thank
Jon

Yes, VATSIM is very complicated the first few times. But once you get used to it its easy.
Try their pilots resource center which will quide you through everything, connection, conduct etc…

I found this site. http://www.curbe.com/QVA/qva/aaron.
I, aswell, have no idea about vatsim. Most the guides just confuse me.
