I’ve been meaning to read his books for years (especially after hearing the Forth Bridge story!), having ordered WOMS I was quite startled to discover how few copies are on sale at the mo – obviously their owners hang on to them!

I’ll second Wyvernfan’s view of Tim’s photo!

Is he? I did wonder. Whilst wholly agreeing with your sentiment the OM and its cousin the CH have limited membership and until and unless a current member dies no new award can be made.

Although I think precedence irrelevant the OM follows knighthood, in fact, but being solely in the gift of the monarch, it is perceived to be a greater honour. I wouldn’t argue with that.

He is one of those who have turned down a knighthood.

If anything he should be awarded the Order of Merit (OM) which out ranks a knighthood and is the highest award that the Queen can give, but he’s probably too modest for that too.

Assuming he is not among those who have declined the honour then it’s bizarre when you think of some of the dross who have been honoured.

I agree with charliehunt 100%.

Don’t know if it’s already been mentioned elsewhere, but there’s a petition to have Winkle given a knighthood.

Funny thing is, I was just about to start a thread pointing out the Wings on My Sleeve can be had for just £3 from branches of the discount books chain The Works. I picked mine up from the Birkenhead branch today.
Just done some Googling, and they do mail order. Worth every penny – but then I’m preaching to the converted on this forum!
